He screams and throws a tantrum if I eat what's in his plate (after he eats my food). Then, he'll take THAT plate of food from me. I've tried everything (even spanking him). Nothing works! Help! --Hungry in Anderson,S.C.

My daughter did the same thing, its a phase, they grow out of it. Until then you could always eat after he's done. You could feed him first, get him involved in an activity and then you could eat you dinner. It doesn't make for good family dinners but it doesn't last that long after awhile you reintroduce eating together and see what happens. good luck.

my daughter's thing is she wants to do everything like me. If I have a container of yogurt and spoon some into a bowl for her, she gets mad b/c she thinks she's getting shafted. I let her see what i'm doing so she knows it's the same thing, this calms her down. I would just put food on both of your plates-- the same food-- and let him eat and you eat, and don't take from his and don't let him take from yours. He might scream at first b/c his language skills are not developed and you've been letting him do it. Let him know he's not to take food anymore before you guys eat. Tell him if he screams he'll have to leave the table, then make him leave. It won't hurt him to hang out in a different room for a few minutes while he screams.

What you need to do is just let him throw his tantrum. He will eventually get tired and stop. All you need to do is learn to tune him out. Most kids throw their trantrums cause they learned early that by doing this they will get their way. Dont give in, and spanking will not help either. Just go on and eat your dinner and let him eat his. If he reaches for your plate tell him that this is your food and that he has his food in his plate. Make sure that no one else in the house allow him to eat from their plate. He will eventually get the idea. It helps if he has a special plate or bowl that he eats from. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

don't sit so close to him when you eat. Sounds as if he's spoiled. Just say no and let him scream eventually he'll get the message. Give him some more food on his plate, maybe he's still hungry. Do not hit him doesn't do any good obviously

There's a good message you sent your child. If you eat my food, I will spank you..makes sense,

In stead of going thru this needless battle of who is mightier..why not just give him your plate?..What;s the big deal if he eats your food?. He is 2 food god's sake. Don't expect him to act like an adult. Are you feeding him when he is too tired?..Is he over hungry when you feed him?..Is it an automatically stressful time at dinner time>?..You need to sit back..relax..and get over the little things in life.

Sit further away and stop taking the food off his plate.

STOP hitting him, you're only teaching him to hit How he gets YOUR plate of food to begin with is beyond me. If he is sitting in HIS chair and I am sitting in MY chair he wouldn't be able to get MY food. All you've taught him is how to continue to steal food and hit. GOOD JOB! (NOT) Stop letting him have what is on your plate and tell him to eat his own.

Children so not reason like you do, but they certainly do observe your behavior. Do not take food from his plate - you are teaching him that it's OK. If he takes food from your plate, ignore him. If you don't react,he'll stop doing it. Guaranteed.

swat his hand and keep swatting until he stops. Poor hot pepper over the food you think he is going to take, but don't let him know it. this sounds more like a discipline problem than a food problem. Maybe you need to get a good book and use it on his bottom.
