I adopted a three month old kitten today. And I named her Cali and she is a Calico so thats where we got the idea.
We went to the store but I stayed in the car with her. She was fine, but when we got home she refused to crawl out of her box. I lifted her out, (Our dog was outside and Cali had not even saw her yet) and she crawled low to the ground to the door and ginger jumped up on the otherside of the door and scared her. I put her back in her box and put her in the bathroom, she was still in the box as I put litter in her box, and then I put water and food in her bowl. I put her out of her box. And walked in the kicthen (dog is still outside). I walked back in and saw her beside the box, scared. I tryed to comfront her but no improvement. I stepped back in the kicthen to countiune making her bed, but when I walked back in she was GONE! I can't find her anywhere, is she just nervous? Should I let her be? THis is the first time I have ever adopted, so tips for what I should do????

Thanks for the answers, I just want everyone to know that the dog is staying outside for the night, because Ginger, the dog tends to think she "rules" the house and we want Cali to be combterful, but we still have not found her.

The same thing happened when we first brought home one of our kittens. You should look behind washers, dryers, stoves, and in drawers. YOU'd be amazed at the places where they can hide. Thank goodness you're keeping her separate from the dog.
I would let her be, keep her food, water, and litter box where she can get to it when she feels safe she will come out. Don't try to force her at all. Try to think of yourself if you were in her position. do you think your dog is going to accept her? I know dogs kill kittens if they can get to them. Please protect your kitten. If possible, put the litter box food, water, and the kitten, in one room that you can keep the door closed and there's low noise for awhile . Please keep us posted on how this turns out. I will be praying for you and Cali!

Aww I am so glad that you had a happy ending there. Before you wrote that last bit I was getting ready to tell you the story of my calico that I took by my mom's house one day. She was still a kitten and a timid kitten at that too...well I took her into one of my mom's bedrooms and then all of a sudden I started to panic because I could not find her either! I looked everywhere in the house even tho I knew that I kept the bedroom door closed. I eventually found her on on the shelf of the end table...I tell ya they can find some very creative places to hide when they wanna!
I think that you are doing just great by doing what you are doing...and if you slowly introduce the dog to her she will get used to the cat...just make sure that the dog is friendly toward the cat before doing that...Good luck and I know that Cali is lucky to have found such a warm, loving home!

Oh, my gosh. Bless your heart. This little kitty was just scared and probably half wild. She is hiding somewhere. Leave her some food near the box and keep your dog away from that area. Also put some water and some paper down.
She will get hungry and find her food. The paper is for her to urinate on. Also, put a litter box. They seem to know what it is for.
It may take a few weeks to tame her, but be patient. Something happened to her before you got her and she is very, very, frightened. Make soothing sounds and put something interesting to play with inside her box. You might also place a little catnip around.
I sure hope you find her. Instinct will make her search for food. If you see her eating, don't get close, just let her do it and after a little bit, you can begin to talk soothing talk to her. Use her name over and over. She will warm up.

You can get a bottle of Rescue Remedy from a health foods store today or tomorrow. The kitten is just scared about her new situation and scared of the dog too.
The Bach flower essences are for emotional healing. She's had a little trauma in her life and is very afraid right now. It will help her making a smoother adjustment. The RR is about $20. You just shake the bottle well and put three to four drops on the fur between her ears. Do it whenever you get the chance for the next three days. You can put three or four drops in her water too and cats don't drink much water. It will most effective put on her fur.
The flower essences are utterly benign and cannot harm her in any way. Maybe the dog could use some too if she is not accustomed to cats.
The entire house is much too overwhelming for a small kitten so confine her most of the time to her own small space. Let her out when you can be with her and maybe not in the presence of the dog for a few days. The kitten will let you know when she has enough courage to explore over parts of the house.

First the cat could smell the dog on you. Second, she is in a new environment please let her have her box and let her take her time. Love on her alot and make sure that you are keeping her and the dog apart. Also make sure you love on the dog because jealousy can make it hard for the dog to accept the cat. Ginger and Cali will grow to accept each othe but keep an eye on them if Cali feels really insecure she may start "scenting" which can be a problem. Lots of love for both.

Cats are really good at hiding. She's probably somewhere nearby but won't come out until she's ready. Try just keeping the house quiet. If you are calling for her and searching the noise may scare her more. When she settles down she'll begin exploring a bit. When she comes out put her in one room of the house and keep her closed in there until she's comfortable with that room. Then expand the area she's allowed into gradually. Cats are really freaked out by new spaces and she needs to have a "safe" place where she has been able to explore everything and can return to when she's feeling frightened.

Don't pay any person for a kitten of no detailed breed (or with out papers) and no vetting. If I had been going to shop for a moggy kitten, I could handiest reimburse the landlord for the rate of any vetting they'd performed. I could get in contact with a number of shelters and ask them to permit you to recognise once they get a calico in or simply preserve checking till you uncover the kitten of your desires (you would even fall in love with another coloured kitty). Calicos don't seem to be infrequent so do not allow any one attempt to idiot you into paying a fortune for one. Backyard breeders prey on folks who appear overexcited approximately a particular colour or style of kitten so watch out.

I have a nine week old kiddy. and two dogs already and n older cat. the y are used to each other now. however, I never leave kiddy unattened as he is not quite litter trianed yet.
so, my tip I have a large doggy kennel for inside. I put a bed in it, its lockable. Here he finds compfort and sleeps in it away from the other animals. It has a blanket on top of it to cover it up. He loves it . He feels save there. as for the cat of yours give her time. but try ot find her. Look in eveyr corner, or in doors or behind drawers. eventuelly she will come out. just give her time. sorry for typos.
