I joined the Army in 1991, and served for 4 years. My brother is in Iraq right now. What have you ever done for this country?

I served in the Navy from the last part of Nam through all of Desert Storm. I enlisted at 17 before I was eligible for the draft. I can tell you that many people who served didn't like the draft because it saddled us with lots of unmotivated people who didn't care about the job, and didn't want to give their all. Add to this the level of technology, and the training it takes to learn how to use it, and draftees wouldn't be worth the trouble. The draft worked up until Nam because all they actually did was run the guy through basic, hand him a weapon, and let him take his chances, they could afford to waste troops because they had an unlimited supply. The fact that unwilling poor kids were being killed while rich kids were staying home was a major contributor to the unpopularity of the war. This war is unpopular enough, a draft, especially if it includes women and does not allow deferments, which has been kicked around in some circles, would be political suicide. Just for the record, I've been an outspoken opponent of this war since it's inception, Saddam had nothing to with 9/11, that was Saudis, he had no weapons of mass destruction, and he posed no actual threat to the U.S. This isn't hindsight, by the way, people were saying it at the time. Tying ourselves up there with no foreseeable end is rendering us unable to deal with more realistic threats, like Iran and N. Korea.

Hey that question doesnt make much sense because there would be no one "first in line" ....because its a draft. If people lined up at all it would be when there is no draft....like right now. Anyway. I'm not a bush supporter, but I just wanted to say that. :o)

Most of us so called Bush supporters feel pride for our country and by extension loyalty to our commander in chief. If circumstances had demanded a draft while Clinton was president I would have behaved no differently.

Whether I was first in line would depend on the draft lottery. It's impartial and would probably snap up just as many of you lib's as it would conservatives.

Maybe you would discover a newfound trust in your brother Americans if you had to depend on them to survive. You already enjoy that protection but it's removed from your sight so I don't think you appreciate it quite yet.

I'm not saying I'm a Bush supporter.

However, if the Draft came back, I'd volunteer.

Ha! Ha! You're funny!

Have any idea how many "so-called-Bush-supporters" have stepped up even WITHOUT the draft?????
Don't be an idiot...There is no need for a draft while there are so many just waiting in line for their turn to defend.

The draft the way it was back in Vietnam will NEVER happen again... we learned our lesson and will not repeat that mistake.. males when they graduate still have to fill out a draft card, however they are then asked to serve.. they are not told they have to serve.. if they refuse they do not have to move to Canada... Vietnam.. they sent to many young men off to die, untrained-even though we do still have a draft.. it is not like it use to be and never will be again.... before they even bother with 18 year olds fresh out of highschool, they will try and recall previous and retired Vets...

If there was a draft -everybody would have to get in line . Wasn't it the democrat senator John F. Kerry , who stated that he was AGAINST A VOLUNTEER army because it would consist of poor , underpriviliged , black and brown most likely to commit war crimes ? I don't think there are too many Bush supporters standing behind John Kerry's racist, lying, wacko would-be policies . Thanks anyway .
