Why do you not make a web search for "French newspapers"?
Some of the news that you will be able to read in French newspapers refer to present day facts and this will help you with reading and understanding the news in French. In case you do need it, start by reading the titles.
For instance, I found this when I did a web search on Yahoo! home page:
http://www.world-newspapers.com/france.html .
Well, this just a suggestion, but I surely hope it helps.
