I have a Mossberg 590 with ghost ring sights and that shoots slugs into about 4" at 50 yards, adding a scope wouldn't help.

My friend has a Mossberg 500 with the rifled slug barrel and cantilever scope rail, we have shot tin cans with that at 150 yards. That makes good use of the low magnification scope he has on it.

Personally I wouldn't hunt deer with a bead sight, my effective range would only be about 15 yards. Others might well do better, but that would be my limit.

Around here it depends on the condition of the day.
If I'm in my tree stand waiting for something to come by I'll use the scoped barrel. If nothing is moving and we start driving to kick some up then I'll use the smooth barrel with rifled choke tube and bead sight.
It's about impossible to shoot a running deer with a scope mounted. I won't squeeze the trigger unless I'm sure it's a good clean shot.

25 year experience hunting deer in MT. I use the scope for slugs, but that's about it. My full time hunting partner doesn't use the scope and doesn't miss much. Lots of practice will give you the answer you're comfortable with.

Scopes usually allow the shooter to see the target better and with magnification . This usually is a plus for most shooters unless you just prefer open sights.

Generally a shotgun has no reliable sights, if you are using slugs use a scope, if you are using buckshot use the sight.
