Catholics believe that Jesus comisioned St Peter as the first leader of the Church. Matthew's gopel has the most direct biblical indication of the papacy: And I tell you, you are Peter (literally meaning rock) and on this rock i will build my church.... I will give you thekeys of the kingdom of heaven. (Mt 16:18-19) based on the statement of Jesus Himself, peter is clearly portrayed in the New Testament as the leader of the disciples. a pope can make infalliable, dinging pronouncements under certian conditions. infalliability doesn't mean that absolutely everything a pope says is free from error. all Christians believe that God protected Holy Scriptures from error by means of inspiration, even though sinful falliable men wrote it. we catholics also believe that God the Holy Spirit protects His Church (Jn 14:16) even though sinful, imprefect men are involved in it.
the pope is like the head of the organization. in the episcopal they they their archbishop (i think that's his title) in othes it's the president of the association. even the first baptist churches, church of God in Christ, methodist, protestant, etc all have a leader at the helm trying to lead the entire masses. this person is to spend their life in prayer and learning trying to help thoseof us who, while we can think and pray for ourselves, often need study groups or other places to asnwer questions. without a leader/guide, to whom would questions be asked - each other is surely one asnwer but do we all have time to dedicate 24/7 to prayer and learning. while i wish it was so, it is not.
God bless!

The Roman Catholic Church or Catholic Church is the Christian Church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, currently Pope Benedict XVI. It traces its origins to the original Christian community founded by Jesus, with its traditions first established by the Twelve Apostles and maintained through unbroken Apostolic Succession.
The Church traces its institution to Jesus and the Twelve Apostles, in particular Saint Peter, the leader of the Apostles, who is regarded as the first Pope. The first known use of the term "Catholic Church" was in a letter by Ignatius of Antioch in 107, who wrote: "Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."
Central to the doctrines of the Catholic Church is Apostolic Succession, the belief that the bishops are the spiritual successors of the original twelve apostles, through the historically unbroken chain of consecration . The New Testament contains warnings against teachings considered to be only masquerading as Christianity, and shows how reference was made to the leaders of the Church to decide what was true doctrine. The Catholic Church teaches that it is the continuation of those who remained faithful to the apostolic and episcopal leadership and rejected false teachings.

Funny, I would say, from my Bible knowledge, that he/ the next elected Popes will lead the Catholic Church until The true AntiChrist /Satan returns/ makes himself known on this planet- probably around the same time when Jesus returns.
The feeling the Catholic Church gives is the he is god here on earth, able to make decrees on what God thinks, change the Bible ( which they've already done ), etc. All things someone against God would do.
Someone who authorizes ( Spanish Inquisition ) or sits by and watches without criticism while thousands die ( Nazi regime during WW2 in Europe ), cannot be a saved/ righteous group/ person.
The Pope puts himself in the place of God, as do all Catholics priests I've met; and yes, I was born and brought up in the Catholic brain washed religion, until I was able to think for myself and study, learning what the Bible REALLY says, not what some pedophile thinks it means.
The city on 7 hills- where the Anti Christ resides- is it ironic that Rome/ the Vatican is built on 7 hills ?

I wasn't aware that the Pope played rolls in the church. Do you mean ROLE??? He's the leader of the Roman Catholic Church-kind of like the President is the leader of the United States.

He is the leader of the Catholic church. As on top of the hierarchy, he approves bishops, cardinals, etc. He is also the Head of State for the Vatican state.

He is the Rock upon whom the Church is built, the principle reason for 2,000 years of unity in teaching, unity in doctrinal belief and unity in worship, just as Jesus commanded. Jesus knew you cannot have truth without unity, and that you cannot have unity without real authority. That's why He entrusted the Keys to the Kingdom into the hands of one man and his successors, the keys of course being the universal symbol of supreme authority.
