From a certain Christian point of view? Not all points of view mind you but certain ones....yes.
In my practice, The Death of Self is actually something that is watched for very carefully, especially within our newest members. The Death of Self is the death of the spirit which is, for all points and purposes the essence of who the person truly is.
There is a need at certain times, during certain times of training and preparation to deny one's self certain things so that one can learn how to truly focus.
But what you have described is extreme and unhealthy as my Order would view it.
The Reverend Mother Erenae
(I practice the early stages of a belief that is currently being researched and tested. At its present evolution it is referred to as Life Vision. Currently we hold no residence in cyber space so although there are websites out there bearing the name of Life Vision we are not in any way affiliated with them. However, anyone who is interested in knowing themselves on a higher level are free to contact me.I shall pleased to help you in any way that I can.)
P.S. Do not let the Reverend Mother part fool you, I am in no way associated with the Catholic Church.
Yet I AM a Reverend Mother.

Death to self is putting off your own wants, needs, & desires and putting what God wants for you first. Being able to deny what you want in place of what is right in God's eyes. Accepting His will & choices for your life & saying "Okay, Lord". Putting the best interest of others even before yourself.
Dead to self - alive to Christ.

Dying to self is to put your need and desire to be sinful away from you and rejecting it even if it helps you out in life. You put a higher principle or precept in place of YOU directing your steps. You live for another, Christ Jesus and HE directs your steps.
It can also be expressed "dying to sin." Putting sin behind you and living as a child of God, by His precepts, not your own, showing preference to do what is right and pleasing to God, not self.
Hope that helps.

From my studies of the Bible, I think that the true death of self is after you ahve become so 'worldly'- so driven for money, possessions, etc. that your true spirit and talents are gone. Your good, conscience and spirit are gone. You have seared your conscience with a 'hot iron' as referred to in the Bible. It is the first step to accepting this world, and rejecting God and His ways.

Death of self is when youre metabolism stops or your brain is sufficiently damaged that your self-awareness or continuity of self cease.
Amnesia, for example, would be non-fatal death of self, especially if the original personality never comes back.

“If anyone wants to come after me, let him disown himself and pick up his torture stake and continually follow me.”—MATTHEW 16:24. The challenge of living the Christian life. In order to be Jesus’ followers, Christians, like their Leader, must serve Jehovah with the spirit of self-sacrifice. (Matthew 10:37-39) Thus, he lists three necessary things a Christian must be prepared to do: (1)Â disown himself, (2)Â pick up his torture stake, and (3)Â continually follow Him.
What does it mean to disown oneself? It means that a person has to deny himself absolutely, a kind of death to self. The basic meaning of the Greek word translated “disown” is “to say no”; it means “to deny utterly.” Therefore, if you accept the challenge of the Christian life, you willingly surrender your own ambitions, comfort, desires, happiness, pleasure. In essence, you give your whole life and everything that it involves to Jehovah God for all time.
To disown oneself means more than denying oneself certain pleasures now and then. Rather, it means that a person must relinquish ownership of himself to God-JHVH. (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20) A person who has disowned himself lives to please, not self, but God. (Romans 14:8; 15:3) It means that every moment of his life, he says no to selfish desires and yes to God-JHVH.

If you die to yourself, then you are basically casting away all your pride, and everything. Basically, you are making yourself pure from others who congratulate you, which you normally would use to boost your ego.
