My right foot becomes really painful every few weeks. Starts at my big toe and goes round the ball of my foot.It also becomes quite swollen. It lasts for about a week. Im planning on walking the west highland way next year and starting to panic a bit now. Nothing in particular seems to start it off.

That sounds a typical description of gout! Go and get some treatment from your doctor.
Take a look at the site below it has lots of info.

If it is gout, you would not be able to touch it
let alone walk with a shoe on it. I would see
a foot dr. as it could be many things from a
pulled tendon to an infection. When you
have gout, you cannot even stand to have a
sheet touch your toe. And it would not travel
back to your ankle either. Try ice for the swelling
and see your doctor.

although it sounds like gout it could be badly fitting shoes or trainers if you do a lot of walking or work out Always wear a shoe with a minimum of 1/2 inch heal some trainers are of poor quality and force you to walk on your heal this is no good ,by the way gout is very painful and has a burning sensation so i reckon its your footwear

Best to go to the doctor. Ask to have an xray, just in case you have damaged a bone or something.
