I woke up this morning and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I did not notice any thing unusual on my face before brushing my teeth, but when I started brushing my teeth, I began to have this burning sensation on my lips, and within seconds, the left side of my lips began to swell. The burning decreased when I washed the toothpaste away from my lips, but the rash or pimple- like swelling remained on the left side of my lips. Is this an allergic reaction, and am I allergic to toothpaste? This is very surprising to me, because I have never had any physical allergic reaction to any thing before- apart from the usual sneezing when I am around dust or heavy scented perfumes- and I have been using the same bottle of toothpaste for the past 3 weeks. I am beginning to think that this might be a result of something else. Please I would appreciate any clues as to what this is.

It could be that some other irritant was on your toothbrush. I'd keep the area clean and observe it for a while. Are you sure it's not a cold sore?

If it worsens, get it checked out.

It sounds a lot like the type of reaction my daughter gets. She has a myriad of food allergies, and sometimes if something we are unaware of in what she ate causes a small reaction, that is what happens. I just give her a couple benedryl and it usually clears up pretty quickly.

To try to isolate what might have caused such a reaction, thoroughly clean your toothbrush, you can even run it through the dishwasher. When your reaction has subsided, try using the toothpaste again. Then try switching to a different type of toothpaste.

Allergies can occur at any point of your life. So just because you have been using a certain product or eating something for years doesn't mean you can't all of a sudden develop an allergy. An allergic reaction happens when something enters your body that your body is unfamiliar with and so to protect itself releases histamines as a protection. It may not be the toothpaste that is directly causing the reaction, but because you were brushing your teeth at the time of the reaction your body may assume the toothpaste was part of the problem. It often takes awhile for something that is newly introduced to build up to a level that your body rejects it. That's why they tell mothers of infants to wait several days to a week between introducing new foods.

Also I would definitely let your Dr. know what happened, because whenever there is swelling like that in the lips or face, there is risk of a full out anaphalactic (sp?) attack.

Unless this reaction began as soon as you starting using the toothpaste, its not an allergic reaction. Make sure you have no cuts on your lips. The toothpaste might just be irritating it and possibly causing an infection. If I were you I would first change my toothpaste, and if it still bothers you, I would see a doctor.
