No file sharing activity with any file sharing program or network is safe. They are all capable of transferring virus's or trojans.

You must always be careful of the file extension - These are some you should not download:
.scr (Same as screensaver - can be misused)
.exe (unless you know its something you want and have a very good virus scaner)
.bat (Dos file - just as lethal as .exe)
.ins
.inf
.dun
.doc (unless you know the sender - doc files can contain harmful macro's/scripts)
.cmd
.com (Also works with dos)
.dll
.hlp (Can contain scripts)
.jar (Java executable)
.msi (Same as .exe - requires Microsoft installer to be present)
.vb (VB files - Scripts - can be lethal)
.vbe
.vbs
.vbx
.xls (same as with doc - cxan contain macro's /scripts)

Any of these can be found on file sharing networks. If you accidentally download one of these you would still have to double click it to execute it (Normally). Files cannot normally execute themselves or change their file extensions (it can be done manually - by you or someone remotely if they can get remote access to your PC).

The only way to make your PC 99% safe is to remove any conenction it has to other networks like the internet or a private lan. Remove the modems, network cards, network cables etc. Even then you are still at risk from someone putting a floppy disk or a CD/DVD into your PC. IF you remove those drives too, then you may be 100% safe.

In reality, few people will go to the extremes mentioned above in order to stay safe. You must trust your own judgement. If in doubt, don't do it.

All file sharing programs and networks can carry virus's. In my years online I've never picked any up from P2P BUT I'm very careful - It doesn't mean I never will though.

If you like my answer, please vote for it.

It depends if the other user in the other part of the world doesnt have viruses on their files. They are trying to make it safer but i do believe that a chance of getting a virus from Limewire files is small. I dont know about Bearshare though.

it's not the actual file sharing program tht gives you the virus it's what you download.....

peer-2-peer is basically you downloading of someones computer....

incidentally limewire does have viruses you just have to watch what ur downloading. But if you do get a virus you can't blame the software.

Rubbish. Limewire is as capable of spreading viruses as any other peer to peer network.

All P2P sites are unsafe. It's not the actual program that's unsafe. You are downloading a file from a stranger who may have attached a virus/trojan with that file, and this is how viruses are spread over the internet. The risk is yours. It's your computer.
