Sounds like she's had a false pregnancy. I don't have personal experience with this with a cat. My sister-in-law's dog had a false pregnancy, though. Her abdomen grew, she lost fur around her nipples, and actually produced a little milk. She gathered a bunch of small stuffed animals and lined them up in a row. She would then go to my sister-in-law and whine and go to the pile of stuffed animals. My sister-in-law had to eventually take the pile of stuffed animals. The dog actually mourned for a while, but eventually snapped out of it with lots of love and attention.
For the cat, I would make sure that no socks were available to her first. Just keep giving her plenty of love and attention. I think she'll snap out of it. Is she spayed? That might help.

My tabby does the same thing. I have trouble finding socks any more. It's kind of a balance between a game, and an outcry for attention. He's my little baby, and whenever he feels his big brother or big sister are getting more attention than him, he'll just sit there and cry until I go pick him up. I don't think there's a cure for such behaviors. I've grown to accept it.

In her mind, she has "killed" the sock for you, and wants you to acknowledge her hunting prowess. Our cat does the same thing with a stuffed snake. She kills it in the middle of the night, then brings it to the door of the bedroom or the foot of the bed and calls until we get up and pet her. When we go out, she'll leave it as a trophy where I usually leave my purse. It's her way of letting you know she's thinking about you :)

try buying a few toys and/orcatnip to keep her distracted & busy. Maybe you need to play with her more often during the day. Or make toys for her from old socks and stuff.

My cat does something similar. She likes to "nest" in a closet. She'll rip up papers or books anything to make a bed. If your cat had kittens in the past this is probably why. My cat had two litters of kittens before we got her fixed.

She wants your attention, my cat cries until pick her up then she purrs, what a pampered pet! Pets have a way of training their owners.

My female does this sometimes and she was fixed before her first heat. I have no idea what triggers this behavior, but she does it more when I return from work, and hardly ever on the weekends when I am home. Maybe she has separation anxiety?

Has she ever lost a liter of kittens??? Our female dog lost a liter and she still acts like she is making a bed for the "puppies" sometimes......they remember they were going to have them but didn't. Good luck!

my cat has done this too.
only with pencils.
she likes to play fetch with me and brings me pencils..usually when im not paying attention to her because she feels left out.
your cat might want you to pet her and give her some attention and is smelling your sock because it has your scent on it. i would sugest letting your cat sleep in your bed with you and leaving your bedroom door open if you don't already. or just give her more attention.
good luck!
