First, you need to define 'simple.' Simple works can be very profound and have deep-rooted meaning. Just as equally, so-called 'complex' paintings can actually be overly stated, pretentious and lacking in any real substance.
Second, how you perceive yourself as an artist is much more important than how a few friends or casual acquaintances see you.
So the real question is: do you perceive yourself as a 'simple' painter? How you answer this will determine to a great extent how others will see your art.

I think a lot of the time, the art stops when the thinking and talking starts.
Dont worry about it, just do what you enjoy.
Unless just being a 'simple painter' torments you, in which case you need to look at how you can become a more complex artist.

You may think of yourself as a simple painter, but that is your skill. Everyone has a creative side, and you are letting yours out, and finding it is "simple".

someone once said that it takes a lifetime to learn how to paint like a child - have you seen the works of mark rothko or matisse? these are seemingly 'simple' but have an awful lot going on underneath.
why be complicated or pretentious? being a simple painter is a wonderful gift. enjoy your talent. xx

Many people find interest in art. I do not quite understand the origin in your question, but here is what I think. I think that if you find something you enjoy, do it as entertainment. When something becomes a job, it is not as thrilling in the results. Perfection is hard to find, so don't worry about being simple.
May beauty be found in your paintings,

You havent described what you paint!
If it is watercolours, which is what i paint then i think you should persist and try to attend a class where you will be taught on what to paint. if you are painting the house maybe you should get should get some nice colour schemes going! If you just want to paint simple things then go ahead but choose your medium carefully!!
