Swans are powerful birds, they bite, and their beating wings can break a man’s arm. Swans display aggression by lowering their neck, hissing, and rushing forward. They protect their territories from strangers and other swans. Its not their bite that breaks ones arm,its the beating of their wings!!!

Don't know of anyone who has had their arm broken, but they do have incredibly strong necks, so they could break your arm if they got hold of it (especially a childs arm). However, swans usually only attack because they feel threatened (like most animals). If you see that the swans have a nest, do not go near them, because then they are very likely to attack. And if you are walking towards a swan and it is acting as if it feels threatened back of a little.
It is very unlikely that a swan will break a grown-ups arm, but if provoked enough, yes, it is technically possible.

I don't think they can break your arm unless you fall while they are chasing you. I love birds, but swans are sooooo mean. I am 27 and I still remember when I was attacked by one in the park when I was 4. Now it's funny, but back then it was so very scary!
I still would not go close to any swan!

Don't mums say a load of rubbish sometimes. No swans cannot break a mans arm if they peck you nor if they hit you with their wings. It's an old wives tail. I've been bashed by several swans and geese over the years and my skinny little arms have never been broken.

I got bitten by a swan once, ungrateful bastard that it was. I was feeding it and it bit my hand. As I was rather young at the time I was too scared and naive to consider checking its gender. But if one of those hateful f*ckers tries it again I'll certainly wrestle it to the ground and find out for you.

I am petrified of swan's. We spent a weekend in Exeter and went for a walk next to the Ex-river. I threw a couple of bread slices to them and the next minute i was surrounded by seagulls, swan's, geese you name it they were there. Pecking and pinching my legs. My legs were a lovely shade of blue, yellow and purple for a couple of days. They can find their own food now, ungrateful birds.

Hiya,

Although by pecking you a swan couldn't break your arm, it could do you a lot of damage.

More than that their wings are extremely powerful, and that could break your arm.

Please don't go near them anyway, as there's no need to and it stresses them out.

This is partially true.
Their beaks are unlikly to break your arm but their wings are very powerful and could easily cause you to fall and break your arm. I know from experience as i was once pushed into a canal by one and i weigh 9 stone!

Geese and swans have VERY powerful wings that CAN actually break the bones of grown men.

Mom knows what she is talking about!

Some farmers keep the freakin things instead of watchdogs!

Seriously.

Swans are very protective of their mates and chicks. Black swans especially can do serious damage with their wings, webs and beaks.
