I am planning a round the world trip for next year and so far this is what I have come up with, although this may well change again!

Flight from London to Moscow, TransMongolian railway to Beijing (best price I have found is either £190 2nd class or £300 1st class), Fly from Beijing to Bangkok- I plan on doing a couple of day trips from Bangkok such as the River Kwai and Ayuthaya by bus.
An internal flight from Bangkok to Phuket, then a bus and boat to Ko Samui and Ko Phangan. The next part Im a bit unsure of but I would like to fly from Ko Samui to Ho chi Minh City and then work my way north to Hanoi by bus and then plane. (I have left out Cambodia and Laos as Im not sure what there is to see there).
Fly from Hanoi to Singapore and then fly to Darwin - Overland to Sydney, fly from Sydney to Auckland - Fiji - New York and then back to London.
If anyone has backpacked around Asia, would you include or exclude any of the places I have mentioned or perhaps change the order?
Thanks

Take the overnight train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. There is a ton to do there, and KL is a lot less expensive than Singapore. Check out my trip itinerary on Yahoo Travel. I was just in both cities in May.

It's also a shame that you are going to be so close to Bali and you aren't going! If you can afford it, go from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, then to Bali and then to Australia.!

If you have the time this is what I did in two months. I started in Beijing and used the train system in China. All the way down south, hitting about 4 or 5 cities on my way. Then I crossed the border into Vietnam and hung out there for a few weeks. I went to about 6 or 7 cities there mostly using the trains and buses. Then I crossed over into Cambodia and went to PP and Seam Reap. You can not miss Seam Reap if you go to Thailand then you have to go to Camodia to see the temples. Very Very well worth it. After I did that I traveled for about 30+hrs straight to get to Ko Phi Phi and chilled out there for a week and then went north Thai and a few days in Bangkok for some shopping before I headed home. I did this on my own as a 21yr old blonde American girl. I had no problems with anyone and felt very safe. If you have any questions feel free to email me. In the mean time you really should just do a search on Angkor Wat (which is located in Seam Reap Cambodia).

I did the trans mongolian by plane, stopping now and then, since I get bored easily, my friends were in 1st class on the train and said it was very comfortable. You must stop at Irkutsk and visit Lake Baikal, the girls in this area are the most beautiful in the world, but visit in summer time. I spent two weeks in Listvyanka talking to lovely girls and just watching the few tourists come for their visits.Mongolia is great, try to go out into the hills on an organised trip or rent a car and go with some friends. Visit Dave's English Bar on Sukhbataar square for good info. Say hi from me. I spent 2 weeks in and around Ulan Bataar.
When you're in Saigon, go to the Sinh cafe, everyone knows it and get on one of their mini buses which go through Dalat, Nha Trang, Hue, Hoi An and then up to Hanoi. it's cheap and you can get on and off when you want for a few days. I built the Ana Mandara Resort in Nha Trang, so I would appreciate it if you'd go and have a beer there, don't stay, it's 300usd and up, for a room, but it's beautiful and has a private beach, the only one in Vietnam.
You cannot bypass the Philippines, and when you come here, I think you will postpone the rest of your trip indefinitely, as many people do. It's so friendly, with thousands of islands and very cheap to travel around. You can be happy here living cheap for 10usd a day, and live well for 20usd a day. I came here for a weekend 14 years ago!!
Don't know about Oz but there's lots of police hassling people who like to have fun. Here you can do anything you want.
Thailand is exotic and the streets are fun, but it's much more about money there rather than the friendliness here, and there's more tourists in one month in Phuket than we have in one year in the whole Philippines, so here is absolutely not crowded.

Sounds great - But I would go from Bangkok to Cambodia and go to Siem Reap (Anchor Wat) - where Tomb Raider was filmed - very awesome place for 2-3 days! Also - Phuket and Koh Samui are very similar - maybe pick one place to stay longer? I would fly R/T from Bangkok to Phuket - then take a bus (cheap) or fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia. If you go to Koh Samui - plan to be there during the famous Full Moon Party each month that goes all night long on the beach (flights to Phuket are cheaper than to Koh Samui). From Bangkok it is easy to fly to HCM City, VN. The rest sounds good. If you can sqeeze in Bali, Indonesia somehow - it will also be well worth it!

I would agree with the earlier answers on Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I havent been there yet but its on my to-do-list.

You may want to check about all the places mentioned in earlier answers at www.virtualtourist.com. You can also get advices and more info from other travelers or people who live in those areas. Good tips are available as well....

Do check www.airasia.com if you are looking for cheap flights that departed from either Macau, Siem Reap, Bangkok, Chieng Mai, Kuala Lumpur (the main hub), several destinations in Indonesia including Bali etc. Hit the web early for better price & dont 4get to check its offers.

Most people would visit Thailand & Singapore & totally forgotten about the country in between i.e. Malaysia. You may want to consider taking a train from Bangkok into Malaysia. Stay for few days in Kuala Lumpur or other state then take a a very comfortable bus ride down to Singapore for your next flight from there.

Whatever you decide, have a safe & great travel!

Ankor Wat in Cambodia is a no brainer. It should be included in any serious SouthEast Asian travels.
I noticed you completely skipped Indonesia too. Sure it's kinda sketchy with corrupt cops and scary muslims, but when you're there you'll find Indonesian are the friendliest people on earth. Stop anywhere, Lake Toba in Sumatera isn't far from Singapore. Jogajakarta has incredible Bhuddist and Hindu Temples. In Papua you can see nature, human and otherwise, unspoiled by civilization. Then there's Bali.
Bali. Please go to Bali. Bali is the best island on the planet; friendly locals, rich culture, flowers, volcanoes sunsets and butterflies. Start in Ubud if you want culture see the monkey forest, the palace, and the elephant caves when you're there ask for Putu if you want a great guide for cheap (she's the best guide in Bali and the only female guide in the whole country) she'll show you the rest of the island. If you're sick of culture and just want to party go south to Seminyak and party 'til you can't see. Then go North to cool off in the lakes and waterfalls. Just go to Bali and you will never go anywhere else again.

The harbour-side city of Auckland is New Zealand's true town and the lively financial center of the country, know it with hotelbye . Auckland is also known as the "City of Sails" and it sprawls out in helter-skelter fashion between Manukau Harbour (to the west) and Waitemata Harbour (to the east) with the compact key town district proper beside the waterway. For some guests to New Zealand, Auckland is the point of birth, and several days washing up the social and outside attractions here must be on every tourist's to-do list. The monuments, museums, and artwork galleries here are a number of the finest in the country. The suburban coastline of the town is speckled with fine beaches, and the hawaiian islands of the Hauraki Gulf provide a taste of New Zealand's spectacular national park scenery right on the city's doorstep. Auckland happens to be a town worth seeing.

I have only backpacked through Australia. it was great. Have visited Singapore and Bali in Asia. I wouldn't worry about Laos at all. The rest sounds exciting, though I wouldn't like to be travelling alone to some of those places. Hope you'll be with others. Have a great and safe time.
