It's not just night vision, and the best time to take infrared pictures is actually high noon. What you're doing is filtering out most of the visible spectrum, and allowing mostly infrared light to show through.

For film cameras, they make black and white infrared print film, and color infrared slide film. Digital infrared is a bit trickier, but can be done with the right equipment. Newer cameras aren't the best, though, because the makers are getting better at filtering out infrared.

Hang on and I'll find some good sites. Infrared makes awesome pictures! Black and white infrared makes all foliage white and skies dark. Color infrared has weird colors.

infrared can produce some really interesting photographs---it's best done on a sunny and warm day---chlorophyll in the leaves makes a glowing effect
---sometimes it just makes your pictures look very dreamy but either way i've gotten some cool results
downside is yu have to load your camera in a completely dark room (no red lights) or in a black bag---film must be kept in canisters too, if yu expose it to any light whatsoever it might mess up your exposures
happy photo-ing
