Definitely not too old. The old standard was 6 weeks old, but now, most reputable breeders will keep their pups until they're at least 8 weeks old. I've seen a vast majority refuse to give their dogs up any earlier than 12 weeks (which is the age of the puppy you're looking at getting).

Hi no the puppy is not too old & the advatage is that he will be stronger than a smaller puppy & maybe had his shots already...if not he can go & get them straight away with no time to wait without having shots like some younger puppies some vets don't like to give them their shots for a few weeks...(not all vets but some) Regards Jake

No, that is the perfect age. It is not good for the puppy to separate from its littermate and parents when it is too young. Separating the pup too early might even cause behavioral problems and perhaps many others in the future because of lack of social interaction from its nest.

12 weeks old is a good timing.

For me personally, I prefer older pups, the older the better, I can avoid potty training and many other trainings. Though puppies are cute, but it is too much hassle, and I am not one patient person who can train puppies well.

Anyway dogs adapt to new families no matter how old they are (see in the cases of rescue dogs, many of them are adult dogs).

Thats 12 weeks and in some states a puppy must be 12 weeks old before seperated from its mom and siblings. Otherwise its illegal. That time with mom and siblings give them the necessary social skills, and the important nutriants they need when that young.

Most responsible and reliable breeders will not place a puppy until they are 10-12 weeks.

Has he or she been treated well? We got a 4 year old basset from basset-rescue and he has been a sweet and wonderful dog.

a dog is never too old to be owned and loved, although if you want to train it specifically to your wants, like a spefic way of potty training your dog, then a puppy between the age of 8-12 weeks would be good.

Of course it isn't too old - that's only 12 weeks. Just ensure he's from a reputable breeder and that you have him fixed as soon as he's old enough.

Get the older pup. It is just a little more mature, may already be houseborken, probably more socialized.
