Hi, First Grant had nothing to do with Gettysburg he was at Vicksburg. General Meade was just appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac. John Reynolds a ranking Corp Commander was killed the first day and was replaced by Hancock who then commanded the First, Second, and Third Corps — three-fifths of the Union army and was considered by most the hero of Gettysburg.
