Two questions - 10 pts to whoever answers both the best...

1) I don't typically have my hair highlighted so I don't know the usual procedure on this.. but I have medium brown hair, I had highlights done and they came out too blonde for my taste; now that my hair has grown out 3 " of dark root I want to do something... What I want are lighter brown/caramel highlights - and only that - but how does that work as far as the blonde that is in there? Do they just do it over everything, what is the procedure?

2) I don't actually know what "name" of highlights to ask for -- I just sort of vaguely say lighter brown/caramel -- but I don't have any sort of guide to visualize -- Can you give me a website that shows maybe a spectrum of highlights and what they're called (that any typical hairdresser would be familiar with if I told them I want "x" color highlights?) Thanks! :)

Find a Redken salon. Redken makes a line called Double Fusion Browns and they are what you are looking for based on the description you gave here. As far as the procedure is concerned, someone actually looking at your hair can determine the best way to get rid of the lighter color that you dont like. This week I had someone in my chair with the same problem. With her, I was able to foil in the new color and process as usual. Then, when I removed the foils, I put a little water in her hair at the shampoo bowl, emulsified the color all over and used the color I had applied for highlights as toner so all the highlights matched. It turned out great and it's the second time I've used this technique on this client because she changes her color depending on the time of year. There are countless techniques, however. Your stylist should give you several options and help you make a decision based on your particular needs. Good luck.

I have been in your situation! For whatever reason, really good hair people sometimes make highlights too light! I first off always tell them, any of the blond highlights in my hair have got to be golden or caramel. Nothing lighter. I do not like white blond on darker hair.

Now, since you already have a situation you want to change, I would say this:
I would like to tie in these white blond highlights with my natural hair color. I do not like their color, I prefer caramel highlights and lighter brown highlights. Do we do this with low lights and caramel highlights? Or how do we do this to tie it all in together?
Then she/he will explain what they have in mind, and you can see if it sounds like what you want. Just be upfront and truthful. Make sure you tell them what you want and ask what they have in mind. Asking questions helps to relieve your anxiety over it as well.
I bet you will love your hair! Have fun. :)

p.s. not that this will happen again, but anytime highlights turn out too light, a special toner can be put on to make them more golden.

I think you should dye your hair back to your natural color and then leave it for like 3 days then get your highlights. As for your second question, when I go get my hair done I just say "blonde highlights" or "caramel" I never even knew there was a name for hair highlights!! So I think you shouldn't worry about it but I'll try to figure it out. Good luck and I hope I helped!!
