Solar paganism was the first recorded system. The first organized religion was Dreamtime, an Australian Aboriginal religion that is still practiced today.

That question puts it all in perspective , whatever the first religion was it lasted a lot longer than this latest bunch will!!
Muslims think their Prophet Mohamed was the last Prophet, how long ago was Islam thought up? about one and a half thousand years? Before that we had this 'Jesus' thing, what about two thousand years ago?
All a mere blink of the eyelid as far as time goes, and I'm very pleased that they are slowly but surely dying out !
From worshiping blocks of stone or the sun we have finally reached the stage where we can now worship a 'thing' floating up there on a cloud some where, and if we are really 'good' we can eventually get a harp and sit on a cloud and strum away for eternity!! Come a long way haven't we??
And while we are still on earth we can actually fight and kill each other to pick the cloud we want to sit on!!
Sorry this doesn't really answer your question, but whatever the first religion was, it was a very tragic mistake!! Just look at what it has done to mankind.

The first Religion would probably have evolved with us and The earliest would have been in Africa. Archeologists have found very early ritual burials> Ritual defines each religion but All are BELIEF in a DEITY!
Maybe When Man Wakes Up and Realises THIS> Called by Any Name, Seen or portrayed in any way and Worshipped in any way its still a DEITY!
There isn't a first there is Only ONE!
If you still need a name BELIEF is as good as any.

Years ago, while there was still some understanding in the educational system; religion was simply defined as "something that man does."
Now true worship and religion are two different things.
Abel came before God with a sacrifice required by God.
That was worship.
Cain brought his produce, veggies and sweet smelling herbs.
That was religion.
The offering of Cain was rejected and it showed what he was really made of. He killed his brother because he found that his own religious ideas didn't please God. God established a way of worship and Cain thought to improve upon it, according to his own thoughts. Soon it became thoughts and traditions and political spin (mythology) for controlling families who loved to rule over others.
So, Abel made a required sacrifice. Cain made a religions offering. In doing so, Cain set the pattern for religious worship by his physical and/or spiritual decendants.
World religious efforts and mythology to this day stem mostly from the family of Nimrod in Babylon, predating population drift to the Orient and other areas East and West of Eden. I consider this the world's primary religion.
Nimrod established his own family as divine, claiming a great spirit with himself as Father and his offspring as Son. When Nimrod died his wife took over as the Mother Of God and the world has been in religious darkness ever since.
God none-the-less continued to reveal His requirements for worship through sacrifice; sometimes through the very ignorance of religion; and finally directly as with Abraham and the Hebrew prophets; then through the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit through the church ages to this hour in 2006.
My answer then is: The first religion in the world was established by Cain and enchanced by his children with the key family player being Nimrod who set the pattern to this day.
I hope you also note from this that the age of a religion gives it absolutely no status in its teachings, traditions or source. Even Christianity is largely tainted with the religious traditions and controls established by Cain and his children.

Religion in the sense of worshipping and doing his will was started in Heaven when God created the first angel, his only-begotten son. The text of Proverbs chapter 8 shows what that angel did and how he felt about doing God's will. On the Earth, it was meant to continue in the same vein, though the work humans were commissioned with was different.
The first reference to any kind of a religious act was the sacrifices performed by Cain and Able. This account in Genesis chapter 4 also outlines the emrgence of the two distinct religions first prophecied (to a certain extent) in Genesis 3:15. There are only two religions as far as the Bible is concerned. While the Bible does acknowledge different forms of religious rites and ceremonies, when it talks about religion in general terms, it indicates that there are only two. 2 Corinthians 6 vs14-16 speaks about righteousness and lawlessness, light and dark, Christ and Belial, faith and unbelief, God's temple and idols. This is particularly evident when you look at the core beliefs of all religions. Trinities have been evident in many religions from a very early period. Only thre religions worship a single supreme God, Jews, Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses. Up until recently, I thought only two religions did not believe in a reward/punishment system that is executed after death. One contributor to Yahoo Answers recently indicated that Jews also believe in this type of after-death reward and punishment. I'm not a hundred percent sure of that, but if it's true, it's one more things that makes the belief system of Jehovah's Witnesses unique. Jehovah's Witnesses have no clergy (Every other religion seems to have a clergy laity system which puts the burden of teaching on the clergy) and so everyone has the resposibility to teach peaple in their own community the truth from the Bible. There are many other things about Jehovah's Witnesses that are unique. Ask one of them and listen to what they say.

People have the desire to worship God and have done from the beginning of time. However, there views became distorted and they worshipped idols and pagan religious groups were formed. The answer to the true God is through our Saviour Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit which gives us the wisdom and understanding to know what the truth is from the false religious cults of this world.
But remember the world's oldest "Religion is found in the Book of Genesis" and is still as important today as it was since the Creation. Everything in the Old Testament of the Bible, came true in the New Testament and the are both coming to a head in these dark days of evil and corruption.

Communing with "The Living God" as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden.
Can't really call it a "religion" per se". It is more a "way of life" to those who are willing and able to experience it.
Historically speaking, the ancient Babylonian religions practiced in Ur and Chaldea were probably the first known "organized" religions.
Fortunately for true seekers of "The Living God", Abraham obeyed Him and left the land of Ur to seek and find his strength and blessing in the covenant promises of the God of Israel. Hence the beginning of Judaism, which also, by the way is the basis of Western Civilization and law. Christianity proceeded from Judaism.
Abraham's disobedience to God caused the birth of Ishmael by his liason with the servant woman Hagar. This relationship was the begining of the Arabic race, most of whom practice Islam.

At first, everyone was monotheistic and worshipped Yahweh, the God of the Bible. That changed, however, as people began to make up their own gods and forget about the God of creation. So, I suppose an early form of Judaism is the first religion.

The oldest Western religion I can think of is paganism (such as the Celtic peoples). It's older than the Mesopotamians/Babylonians, who were taken over Greco-Romans and Judaism, both of which were supplanted by Christianity, and that was outstripped by Islam.
In the East, it would probably be something like Hinduism, with Buddhism and Confucianism following after. Sikhism has never had as large a following I think.
