I currently drive a 2000 Focus. It's recently got some mechanical problems that might take over $1000 to fix. For now, it's drivable without any issues. I'm moving to Japan for 3 years and am crazy busy until I leave and won't have much time to get it fixed or sell. We still owe $4K on it. My question is this: do we give it to the gov't to store for free while I'm gone? I could use it as a trade-in or fix it once I got back when I have more time and resources. I would be making $200 payments on it another 20 months. Or, should I sell it and possibly take a loss on what we owe and be rid of it and start over once I'm back?

The gov't storage place drives them every month and I've been told they take great care of people's cars. I've know other people that have left their cars and no one has reported any problems on return.

Sell the beast. You'll lose 2 years worth of payments PLUS 3 years of depreciation. Even if the government is storing it for FREE, it's sitting there doing nothing for you except costing you money AND getting old. You can turn around and save those monthly payments in a bank account. When you get back, you can use that cash on a down payment for a NEW car with NO problems.

Yes, you need to sell it and I will tell you why. If it sits up for 3 years the gas tank will be rusty inside and you will have a lot of trouble. There are many other reasons but the wise thing to do is sell it even if you can store it free. Put it in the classifieds and try to get what you owe on it and pay it off.

I'd have to agree with everyone on here...sell it...3 yrs down the road you won't even remember what it looks like...and it is just a ford focus...not some classic...sell it for what you owe and move on...cars come and cars go.

Sell it. You won't have the pain of making the monthly payments and storage fees. Plus, you'll have some extra cash in your pocket. :D

Sell it. Take the loss now. Cars depreciate in storage and gaskets tend to dry up and crack and start leaking. If it needs $1000.00 in repairs now, it will probably need $2,500.00 in repairs in three years.

you know it doesn't matter where the car is made, as long as you buy the headlight for the same car from the same year, your fine... btw, just go to your local junk yard and buy one, its a lot cheaper.
