For a total NOOB:

Linspire
Ubuntu or Kubuntu (I like Kubunto).
Mandriva
Suse (I like this one also).

If my mom wanted to use LInux (she is 70), I would recommend Linspire.

Mandriva works nicely on my Dell Dimension 2400 - I can play DVD movies, use my USB memory stick, connect perfectly to the web every time through my external serial modem, edit my digital pictures, listen to CDs and MP3s, do vector drawing in Inkscape, and surf securely on Firefox.

What else? Oh yes, the disc only cost me slightly more than lunch at McDonalds, and lasts forever - no irritating product activation and licensing nonsense like Microsoft.

Go Linux - see just how COOL a computer can be - plus it's immune to all known viruses and malware!

DC :)

I think the most user-friendly is Debian.
RedHat is pretty good too.
