heck, I'm 38 and still dont' smoke in front of my mom. Same thing...my fam doesn't smoke and I didn't wanna go thru the lectures and such. some things just aren't worth it. besides, they'll be upset that you're smoking, and worried about you.

The problem with smoking freely in front of everyone is that everyone will be forced to inhale the smoke from your cigarettes. And those who don't smoke are not going to be very happy about it.
Perhaps non-smokers can accept that you can poison yourself, even if they have to pay for a part of your healthcare bill throught their taxes. But most non-smokers will object to being poisoned themselves with your cigarette smoke.

your 21. Smoke freely as you want. You may here some shi* from your parents but you are an adult. Maybe just to show some respect with them if they don't like to see you smoke don't smoke in front of them. Your friends have nothing to say about your choice. and why are you embarrassed? It will only last a min. If your embarrassment lasts longer are you really comfortable with smoking in front of people. Do you really care what they think???..L

You are 21 and can't admit to anyone that you smoke? What kind of repressed childhood did you have. Just grow a pair, step outside on the deck and light up.
I am sure your family will care but what are they going to do to you? Take away your TV watching privileges? You are an adult, act like one. Of course that also means accepting the fact that you will probably suffer a multitude of health related issues and die younger than most. But hey, it's your choice.

no lectures huh? ok then. the only thing i can say is, your 21. you can do whatever you want. but i don't think you will ever be able to smoke freely. especially around your family of non-smokers. the only place you'll be able to be comfortable smoking is when your with your smoking buddies. and don't be offended if people tell you to smoke away from them, some people just can't be around the smell.
good luck.

OMG
If you are scared of telling your parents...isn't that a clue that you are in to something you shouldn't be doing? Are you looking for lung disease? Early wrinkles? Less effective lungs? Yellow teeth?
Shortness of breath? Cancer of the lungs, esophagus, throat etc? You want to slowly die from emphysemia?
Have you ever seen a person with lung cancer or emyphenzima?
It is so nasty you can't imagine it.
I am a retired nurse and have seen fairly young adults,(younger than myself) have to be on oxygen, can't live a normal life, Have cancer of the tounge and have to have it removed and can't talk, I took care of a man who lost the whole side of his face to cancer.
I had to take the bandages off and rinse out the hole in his face to keep it clean. You can't imagine how extreemly horrible a person looks without half of their face.
If you ever get pregnant the child will most likely be underweight with will be prone to all kinds of health issues even death.
You are in college. How can you be so stupid? How can you be 21 and feel the need to slowly kill yourself.
Clue here.....big flashing red lights....you are concerned with telling your parents.
Quit now when you can . Love yourself enough to quit.
Please be brave and strong and don't fallow the crowd.
I just can't stress enough how bad smoking is for you.
Being in college is a very brief moment in your life, but a smoking habit will fallow you to the grave.
I am 56 years old and notice in the picture that I look pretty good for my age. If I had smoked I wouldn't look that good. I know people way younger than I am who smoke and look 30 years older than I am. So, if nothing else, stop smoking to keep your skin less wrinkled and so that when you are as old as I am you will still look good.
Please give all of this come though and STOP

OK go ahead and smoke. Wow!! your all grown up now, 21, WOW again. Your real smart. Let's see how much you "enjoy" smoking in a few years when your coughing up blood, on oxygen, have a lung removed and can't even walk to the mail box without huffing & puffing.Think I'm kidding? You'll see.I pitty you, Bright young lady.
P.S. You ask about "getting through this painlessly"? HA HA HA HA. ! You better get used to pain.

I have dealt with this a lot...
You will later realize that you are smoking only because people tell you NOT to. It's a "self-defining" thing.
Trust me...they already know...You can't hide the ash tray smell.
Anyways...At any get together...Just excuse yourself, step outside, and have a smoke. You don't have to rub it in their face or anything. Just treat it as no big deal.

You are 21 if you want to smoke you can. I was also the first person to start smoking in my family and my parents were upset at first but they eventually got used to it and just made me smoke outside when I was at the house. Good luck to you!

As someone who quit after 25+ years of smoking, I have to tell you that your decision is stupid, and that your only intelligent choice is to quite right now. Now, you said you won't accept that answer - so be it - many thought that trying heroin only once is a sign of their intellignece and maturity, too. I knew one who died at the age of 16. If you've made up your mind, you should just go out and say it - mom, dad, whoever, I want you to know I decided to be a smoker. Your health won't be affected and it won't hurt you, physically, so don't try to talk me out of it. And if your guy decides to dump you, great - one obstacle less on your path to "freedom," right?
