Synesthesia is the phenomenon of experiencing a sensory stimulus with a sense other than the one actually being stimulated. For instance, some people report being able to taste shapes or colors. Others may describe the texture of a number or a sound. These are examples of synesthesia. Synesthesia could also be described as the brain's ability to form relationships between seemingly incongruous data.
In you're interested in reading more on the topic, I'd recommend "Mind of a Mnemonist" by A. Luria. Luria reports on an ongoing case-study of a man with a profound memory. His abilities stemmed from the fact that he experienced extreme synesthesia almost all of the time. For instance, if he were given a string of numbers to remember, he remembered them not as numbers, but as a series of faces that he might see while walking down a street. It's a pretty cheap book, and definitely worth the read, if you're interested.

There was a gent I read about who would get the taste of earwax in his mouth when he heard a certain name. I can't remember the name exactly, but you can look up the report on the BBC news website. It's probably archived by now.
Also, I saw a documentary about it, and there was a woman who saw sounds. Bird song was like little bits of colored paper in the air.
