Probably Jehovah's Witnesses. If it was _The Watchtower_ that they gave you, that's who it was.
I have no idea what would have happened had you answered the door naked.

Dear TinaMarie,
I guess we have something in common. They woke my grandson from his nap when they rang the doorbell this morning!
I did have a conversation with the very nice couple. I told them that my mother and several of my relatives are jws and even though I love them I know that they are among the biggest spreaders of false religion, a religion of Works not GRACE.
I mentioned to them that I have read a whole lot of Watchtower publications and whenever I ask jws questions about the material they tell me "We don't use THAT book any more." I have a big problem with that.
They gave me the book What Does the Bible Really Teach? and asked me to read it. I told them that I would read it IF they would read Deuteronomy 18:20-22 along with the long list of failed Watchtower prophecies.
Don't listen to the Watchtower Witnesses but do not answer the door half naked.
Whirlingm: That was a great link. Thank you!
Gingersnap: They do watch television and the ones I know do drink

Jehovah's witnesses. I was raised as one. I hated going door to door at (field service). No one ever answered but I didn't know they were home and just didn't want to talk to us. I don't believe in it now but just imagine how horrible it was to actually be the one knocking on the doors of people that hate you. Never would i put my kids through doing that, not to mention preaching to others about such a absurd cult with a terrible track record.

Spies from another galaxy. Don't answer the door naked, it'll probably be regarded as some kind of compensation-liable crime in twenty years, you know the thing - abuse, trauma etc.

the problem is you aren't specific enough to tell us who they are
false religion is a problem... no doubt... but who they are and what was they message? it might have been the true gospel or a false one
don't miss out on the real gospel because you dont like someones style or because some confused people knocked on your door

Jesus says: “Look! I am standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his house and take the evening meal with him and he with me.” (Rev. 3:19, 20
[He] Jesus, pictures himself as standing and knocking at your door. What an amazing picture! Imagine it is your house and you are on your own, about to have the usual evening meal. Then suddenly you hear a knocking and a voice announcing who it is. The Lord himself! Why, of course, you would immediately invite him in. Rather, you would know that the real purpose of his call was to give you the benefit of a rich, upbuilding, spiritual feast and to enjoy precious communion with him in the homely atmosphere of personal friendship. Is that not what Jesus did when on earth and invited in for an evening meal, such as with Lazarus and his sisters?—Luke 10:38-42.
So, when Jehovah’s witnesses stand at your door and knock remember Jesus’ words to his witnesses: “He that receives you receives me also.” And, “Where there are two or three met together in my name, there I am in their midst.” That is now the way to have a spiritual meal with Christ. That is your opportunity. And your responsibility.—Rev. 3:20; Matt. 10:40; 18:20, NW.
Why do Jehovah’s Witnesses preach from house to house?
Jesus foretold for our day this work: “This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” He also instructed his followers: “Go . . . and make disciples of people of all the nations.”—Matt. 24:14; 28:19.
When Jesus sent out his early disciples, he directed them to go to the homes of the people. (Matt. 10:7, 11-13) The apostle Paul said regarding his ministry: “I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house.”—Acts 20:20, 21; see also Acts 5:42.
The message that the Witnesses proclaim involves the lives of people; they want to be careful to miss no one. (Zeph. 2:2, 3) Their calls are motivated by love—first for God, also for their neighbor.
Are the "churches" doing this commision/commandment giving by Jesus, witnessing earthwide: "This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come." "...teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things"-Matt. 24:14; 28:19, 20
A conference of religious leaders in Spain noted this: “Perhaps [the churches] are excessively neglectful about that which precisely constitutes the greatest preoccupation of the Witnesses—the home visit, which comes within the apostolic methodology of the primitive church. While the churches, on not a few occasions, limit themselves to constructing their temples, ringing their bells to attract the people and to preaching inside their places of worship, [the Witnesses] follow the apostolic tactic of going from house to house and of taking advantage of every occasion to witness.”—El Catolicismo, Bogotá, Colombia, September 14, 1975, p. 14.
Professour of religious history, Charles S. Braden (September 26th 1959) observed: “Even their church buildings are called kingdom Hall.” He continues: “Jehovah’s Witnesses have literally covered the earth with their witnessing…it maybe truly said that no single religions group in the world displayed zeal and persistence in the attempt to spread the good news of the kingdom than the Jehovah’s Witnesses.”
From State Church to Pluralism (1971), by F. H. Littell, says: “However incredible and literal-minded the J[ehovah’s] W[itnesses]’s peculiar doctrine of the Kingdom may seem, we should not forget that in biblical religion the advent of the Kingdom is a moment of dramatic penetration and reversal of the normal course of human expectation.”—P. 212

They are called visitors...lol..sorry, I couldn't resist.
I think you are referring to Mormons. Did they call themselves all Elder John, Elder Fred, etc? If so they are Mormons.
Tell them you are a Christian...for some reason this works better than anything else.
