Vin numbers on the body as "legal" identification did not become standard practice and 50 state legal until 1957 if memory serves. Before that they used an "engine number" off the engine block. Because of the confusion caused by engine swaps and such they decided that was best to title the body and started putting on vin or serial numbers. Many vehicles had them before then, but weren't required and weren't used legally as id. If it is a 54 you should be able to title it off the engine itself if still around.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

Good luck. They did not use a "VIN" back then. You may find the occasional build tag, but on something that old you have to get lucky. VIN's were introduced to decrease theft. Not alot of theft back then. You may check under the seat cushions and get lucky and find a readable build sheet. That was mostly under the rear seats of the old cars, though.
