There are tons of self-help books out there. Go to a music store and have them recommend one to you. Find one with a play-along cd. Use that and your ears. Listen to some of your favorite songs and try to imitate the drummer. If at all possible you should try to get a couple lessons so that you start out with the proper technique. Then you can work on your own until you max out and then get a teacher. The main thing is to get off with a good start. If you do it all by yourself you may start out wrong and get frustrated or find out later that you have to make changes in your playing.

i did the same...i never got lessons. just make up some beats in your head..then transfer them to the drums. if not...just listen to a lot of music that has good percussion or good beats..and listen to them closely. you can also buy books or videos online. they help.

play a song that you really like, and try to follow it with a beat and put it down tact. that will get you started at least.
then buy drumming for Dummies.
