My daughter gets cronic bloody noses in the winter, due to dry weather. We live in an apartment so adding a humidifier to our heater is not an option. I have used a small humidifier in her room in the past, but am concearned about the possibility of mold.
Does anyone have some ideas on how to lessen the frequency of the bloody noses?
She has been checked out for clotting disorders and other possible medical reasons for them. She is perfectly healthy and just has thin membranes in her nose, which, from my understanding, may change as she grows.

Thank you so much!

Oh, the poor sweet pea! I can't imagine that cauterization is an option for a 7-year old. I wonder if at her age she can use a saline nasal spray? You might want to check with her doctor, but they're available over the counter.

My mom had chronic nosebleeds and used an OTC nasal spray a few times each day to keep the membranes moist. Or what about the old fashioned steam treatment? Hot water in a pan, with a towel over her head to take in some of the steam a few times each day?

Good luck!

My daughter will be 9 in Dec and we go through the same thing with her and some of hers can get real bad lasting up to an hour. Here is what her ENT had us start doing last winter and so far it has helped dramastically. First there is a product you can buy over the counter called nasalayr it is a watery substance that you put just inside the nose ( Vaseline really does work only it is thicker ) second we put a cool mist humidifier in her room beside her bed and clean it on a daily basis, we pull the nightstand away from the wall some and place it on a towel so it doesn't leave the dampness as bad. He also suggested it might be allergy and isnus related and had us try Claritin ready tabs which they did help some but I think the other helped more. Good news is it does get better, my oldest did the same thing and came out of it for the most part by about 12.

I agree with the other person.
My son had the same thing and he had the cuaterization done.
He rarely has bloody noses.
I do suggest that if you get a get a digital thermometer with humidty meter. You can ask your doctor about the mold but I set my humidifer and dehumidifer to about 45%. Its not dry air but above 50% it becomes sticky, You can purchase them from Walmart, Target, etc. The one below keeps high/low temp. Some keep hi lo humidity.

My little sister also had a problem with getting constant bloody noses. My mom took her to the doc. and they also said she had a membrane close to her nostrile, so they burnt it, and then her bloody noses stopped, well not completely but she gets them every once in a great while. I would also try vasiline in the nostril 2x a day. in the morning and before bed, I hope it works, good luck!

if putting neosprion doesn't you may want to have her seen by an ENT to have her nose cauterized. My daughter had it done the day before she turned 6 years old. She has only had 4 since then and that has been almost 1 year.

Believe it or not try vacuuming her mattress very good. There are many dead skin cells (among other things) in our mattresses that we breathe in as we sleep. This just adds to the drier air of the winter heater... This ALWAYS helps when my 9 yr old starts her winter nose bleeds. I used to get many nose bleeds as well. I still get them once in a blue moon but nearly as often.. Good Luck! the vaseline trick sounds good too.. think I'll try that as well..

Frequent bloody noses are caused by thin membranes and capillaries near the surface. If they continue into adulthood cauterization of the capillaries might resolve the problem.

Having been through 3 daughters with same problem...do this..take a q-tip with a very small amount of vaseline...and rub around the inside of nostrils.....truly does the job. This advice was given to us many years ago, we still use it in extreme dry winter months.

my five year old son has the same problem the doctor told me at night to put vaseline in his nose, and during the day use saline nose spray it keeps the nose moist so it doesn't get dried out and will not bleed
