My pug just had surgery yesterday to open it's nasal passages so it could breathe better. However, when I picked her up yesterday her nostrils were really big and are still big today. Is this normal? Are they always going to be big? I loved her pug-nose, but now it's just a nose with big nostrils, if that makes sense. Ever heard of this?

It is just post operative swelling..You ought to see patients after they have had a face lift!! They don't want anybody to see them until that swelling goes down! Children, as well..after sinus surgery, they really look funny for a few days..Don't worry about it, she will appear the same after a few days..(I'm a retired surgical nurse)

Stenotic nares are somewhat common in pugs because they have no snout, so it makes it hard to breathe. This does not happen to the majority of pugs but it is not rare.
The problem happens inside the nose, not at the outside edges. I'm not sure what your vet did but you should call your clinic up and ask if it will remain that way. It's possible there is some swelling internally that is affecting external appearance. If so, just try to rest assured that you did what was best for her and it will improve and extend her quality of life. Most of us aren't into pugs because of their extreme beauty anyways, right? It is their personality that wins us over. Best wishes!

It's probably still swollen after the surgery. It's just like a person having a nose job, cutting and poking around on the body causes excess fluids to enter the area during the healing process. If you're really concerned, I would contact my vet. I am sure they could assure you of the same thing.

Well, unless you got the quote in writing on paper, you are outta luck. If you feel like they misled you on purpose, then find a more honest vet. If you are pleased with the job they did, then keep the vet and suck up the bill. Personally, I think that sounds like a great price for two massive surgeries.

Stenotic nares, brachicephalic dogs have a tendency to this. She will have some swelling with the surgery, but the nares will continue to be open thats the point of the surgery.

I always wonder what possessed people to breed a snout off of a dog. The reason I would never own a smushed face dog breed is because of all the breathing problems they have.
