Religious oppression started some of the settlements. Many existing governments began due to oppression.

There are huge differences in the two. This New World didn't have any central government and no laws. The Indians were a collection of many different tribes most all with different languages..No one tribe was in control of the land.Since there was no single language it was better for the settlers to keep speaking their English. There were no laws against immigration so our ancestors were not illegal. They were settlers in a very harsh land. They fought a war with the Indian tribes and they won the war.It wasn't the right way to do it but I was not there and neither were any of us so I don't know except this land became the USA.My own ancestors came here in 1702 from Germany
they were merchants looking to increase their holdings. They were brave ,honest ,hard working people. They helped carve out a new nation in the New World. They were not illegal. There were no laws against mass immigration until 1924.There were a few exclusionary laws that applied to certain types of people but not against mass immigration.
While the original people that came over on the Mayflower ,were seeking religious freedom and to escape percussion, many came later were people that wanted a new world to explore, adventure, new chances
to make their fortunes. They were not illegal so there
can be no comparison to the people that settled this nation and made it what it is today and the
unlawful acts of illegal aliens.
RKO your facts are just a little twisted.I am not sure what country you live in but you don't have the facts straight about the USA.Taxation without representation was here in this country not where we came from.It was with England remember the Boston Tea Party from grade school. And the settlers did not just come ashore and start killing ,you are wrong again. The Indians also murdered, raped and pillaged. You need to get your facts straight I think

Things have changed since this country was settled. We have established a government, we have passed laws, and formed a Constitution. The very 'settlers' and 'immigrants' you speak of are the ones who worked hard to make those laws and changes to make this country what it is today. It is not racist to want our laws enforced. It is not racist to want to secure our borders in a time when terrorists are threatening our country every day. It is not racist to want to control who comes into our country. The 'race' card is being flung about on every statement made against illegal immigration. How can it be a race issue when it is including illegal immigrants from any nation who come here without proper documentation? How presumptuous of any illegal immigrant from south of the USA to assume we want our laws enforced totally because of them!! We also want our border with Canada secured and controlled. Those people south of the USA are paranoid. They think the world revolves around them and that every move the USA makes is directed straight at them. How wrong they are!! They have a guilty conscience for demanding what is not rightfully theirs to receive. No immigrant from any other country is as arrogant and self rightous as the people in the USA from the Latin American countries. They are more racist than the American people of the USA.

The first illegal immigrants came from England, ask any Native American.
The English brought in more illegal immigrants, against their wills, from Africa.
New Orleans was built by the French who also employed illegal blacks to build the city.
The Spanish loved Florida...smart Spaniards.
San Francisco was built by illegal immigrants from China.
When Ellis Island was working in New York, during our last huge wave of immigration, millions of people came into this country legally. Polish, Irish, Danish, Italians, English, Dutch, all of them who make up the "melting pot" we've become. I'm half Danish/half Costa Rican, 3rd generation American. And the Statue of LIberty was imprinted on these new Americans as a symbol of freedom.
Perhaps we need to send the lady of LIberty to the southern boarder as a reminder that she still welcomes "your tired, your poor yearning to breathe free."
Or, we can spent the stupid money on fencing out our neighbors, instead of improving their economy so they want to stay home.
Your choice.
We have no Ellis Island in Texas, and so consequently all the Mexicans have arrived "illegally".

I would like to comment on the user wattha...first of all you need to get your facts right!!! You do not impress me or anybody with your made up facts......ask yourself the question of where you are from .....? your probably a mutt....made up of many immigrants that came to this country many years ago(illegally) Don't criticize man... and on the other hand look to the senate...where a bill was passed, about two months ago to help the many illegals( which are not terrorist)...get naturalized so they do not have to work and live illegally in this country, Most of these people have been living and working hard, and paying taxes, I think they deserve a little break, think about who does your landscaping, Who takes the low paying factory jobs, who does most of the construction jobs, etc etc........ Guess what man....ILEGALS.....HARD WORKING PEOPLE THAT JUST WANT A BETTER LIFE....THIS COUNTRY STARTED OUT WITH IMMIGRANTS.....YOUR ANCESTORS...SO STOP BITCHING AND THINK ABOUT YOUR ANSWERS BEFORE POSTING THEM. THANKS ;)

how can asking a question about illegal immigration be racist?
wanting the illegals out of this country because, of how they are hurting it doesn't make anyone a racist!!!
i don't give a sh!t where they come from...illegal is illegal and they have no rights here.
you and anyone else can call me a racist all ya want...it's not going to change my mind on voting day and i'm not going to shut up. I want to see my country get it's head out of it's as$ and realize the illegals (all of them, from every race) is draining us.
what part of that sounds racist to you?

The first 'white' settlers immigrated from Europe to escape government oppression and tyranny, taxation without representation, and to enjoy religious freedom.
Ironically, as soon as they set foot on this new land, they massacred a preponderance of the native Americans, raped their women, slaughtered their buffalo just for the sport of it, squandered their land, and eventually put them on 'reservations' where they'd be conveniently "out of the way".
Today we live in a police state where citizens are presumed guilty until proven innocent, and where - again - only the privileged few enjoy freedom from persecution, oppression, or tyranny. We are taxed without representation, "ruled" by incompetent, incorrigible, contemptible, arrogant, greedy, evil, corrupt leaders who only have their own self-interests at heart, and we are subjected to countless kinds of oppression from a government that long forgot it's supposed to serve its people.
Hatred begets hatred. Bigotry begets bigotry. Killing begets killing. War begets war. It's too bad our political leaders aren't required to take a course in American history and remember how/why this country got started. -RKO-

Not exactly. Virginia was the first colony settled, if you recall. Massachusetts was founded sort of on religious freedom. Virginia, however, was founded as an economic venture. It was also the first to have democratic self-government (House of Burgesses).
