Absolutely!! If you have the opportunity to go, do it!
You will either learn to speak or you will starve, and I PROMISE you won't starve!!
Seriously, there is no greater education than to go live in another culture. You will learn so much more than just the language and that is no small thing in itself!! It is an experience that you will carry with you forever.
As far as what someone said regarding what the Spaniards think of the way Mexicans speak Spanish....all I can say is that I am from Spain and what she heard is probably ONE person's opinion. It's like asking about the difference between how the Brits, the Irish, the Aussie, the Scots, The New Zealanders and the USA speak English. There are differences, but one is not *superior* to the other.
Go for it! I would say try to do a year abroad while you are in college also, but to a different country so you can learn about a different culture and expand your vocabulary.
Good Luck!

If u want to yes. It's always best when u are learning a language to go where people actually speak everyday. I've got a friend who went to Mexico and Chile for some time and when she came back her Spanish was excellent, she sounded like a true Hispanic speaking.

There are quite a few Mexican people in the United States, especially in California. Perhaps you can find some Mexican people near where you live to begin conversing first. Or even better, you can begin practicing with your teacher and classmates. Then when you become a bit better at talking you can find people who are fluent and talk to them. After you are getting somewhat fluent in speaking, then you can go to Mexico. This way you can get the most out of your trip to Mexico. I would recommend a foreign exchange program so that you can get totally immersed in Mexican culture and you will be forced to speak Spanish. If you go with your family, you will probably still speak English to one another so that wouldn't be quite as helpful. Good Luck!

Thats a great idea but in my opinion being a native spanish speaker U have to remember that in Mexico they have alot of words that in the rest of Latin america we dont use and because of what has been happening with the immigration they are not very fond of some Americans unffortunately. If I were U Id go to Puerto Rico here the majority of the population unerstands English pretty well and we have nothing against Americans !!! hope I helped and good luck with Ur spanish clases !!!

YES! I learned Spanish at a school in Guatemala, and immersion is so, so important when learning to use a language conversationally. I feel I progressed much faster than I ever would have if I had been speaking mainly English outside of the classroom.

I've heard that Guadalajara, Mexico Has the quality University and present categories for what you wish to have. I'm now not definite if it is Guadalajara, Mexico or Michoacan a type of 2 however the University is in Guadalajara and lots of popular persons and athletes have studied there. But I could pick Spain as they talk the truly proper formal Spanish Language................................... good fortune and thank you for seeking to gain knowledge of our tradition & language :-)

It could be but you would have to have someone with you that knows how to speek it very well. You could probably pick up quite a few things if you really pay attention and ask questions. also you could ask your spanish teacher or take a outside of school spanish class.
