in maccabees it states that a son made reperations for his fathers sins on earth after his father dies. we are also told that we will be judged and purified after death and prior to entering into the kingdom of God. i'm sorry i don't have my personal references handy but this came from the wipik.
Scriptural References
The word Purgatory, just as the word Trinity, does not appear in the Bible, nor is the concept spelled out in detail. Scripture verses cited in support of a period of purgation after death and/or the efficacy of prayers for the dead include Dan 12:10;[5] Zech 13:9;[6] Mal 3:2-3;[7] 2 Mac 12:42-45;[8] Matthew 5:26;[9] Lk 12:47-48;[10] Lk 12:58-59;[11] 1 Cor 3:13-15;[12]; 2 Timothy 1:16-18[13] Apoc 21:27[14] and others. The extent to which these passages refer to a state of purgation remains subject to interpretation -- a matter of faith.

when we die, we are called to stand and be judged. how long does this take? is GOd meeting with everyone at the same time?! i see it as my time waiting for my time before God and my time in purification for my sins. i do believe you can pray for those who have died and are standing before God in judgement or withstanding the purification flames. God is all loving and thus, would not IMO allow prayers to be unheard and un felt.

if you'd like more information from the catechism go to www.vatican.va and it's all there. again, i'm sorry i don't have my own references available.

God bless!

+ Purgatory +

The concept of purgation is hinted at in the Bible. Here are a couple of places:

"But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire." 1 Cor 3:15

"So that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 1 Pet 1:7

Are you perfect now? Most people would say no.

Will you be perfect in heaven? Most people believe yes.

Purgatory (or purgation) is the process of God's love changing our imperfect selves on earth into perfect beings in heaven. Depending on the amount of change needed by different people, this can be an easy or slightly harder process. Everyone in purgatory is on his or her way to heaven. I do not think Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a very hard time of it.

+ Sources of Doctrine +

The Catholic Church does not only use Holy Scripture for the basis of doctrine. The early Catholic church existed before and during the time that the New Testament was written (by Catholics).

Catholics also believe that the Holy Spirit was guiding the early church (and is guiding the church today) to make the correct choices about things like
- The Holy Trinity (which is also only hinted at in the Bible)
- Going to church on Sunday instead of Saturday (which is actually directly against one of the ten commandments)
- Which books to include in the New Testament?
- How do our imperfect selves on earth get to be perfect in heaven?
This second source of doctrine is called Holy Tradition.

+ With love in Christ.

it incredibly is decrease Heaven if protestants do in comparison to purgatory: a million Corin 3:15 If the artwork is burned, the builder will go through loss; the builder would be saved, yet in basic terms as by way of hearth. shop in basic terms via cleansing hearth. Matthew 12:32 And whoever speaks a be conscious against the Son of guy would be forgiven; yet whoever speaks against the holy Spirit should not be forgiven, the two in this age or interior the age to return. Sins are forgiven interior the age to return: even idle words are cleansed in decrease heaven...

Purgatory was taught as a holding place for souls. The dead person's family could then pay the Catholic church (called indulgences) so the priests would pray for the dead person and get them out of purgatory and into heaven.

It's not Biblical at all. But it is a big money maker.

it is not at all Biblical. It is more in line with Dante's inferno and lines up with pagan beliefs, which is where most of Catholic doctrine and tradition come from anyway.

It is the idea that if you have not committed any major or 'moral sins' but still are not quite good enough to get into heaven- you did not say quite enough hail marys or something, you spend time in a limbo, the area between heaven and hell- the only thing you can hope for then is depending on your lifestyle you have a certain amount of time oyu have to spend there before gaining entrance into heaven or if oyu are lucky enough, relatives can pray you out early.

What is Biblical is that ALL fall short of the glory of God, no one can do enough to earn their way into heaven- only be God's grace and the sacrifice of Jesus can we make it into heaven and God does not classify sin as mortal and venial- sin is sin and if oyu are guilty of breaking one law you are guilty of the whole thing, our only hope is in Christ Jesus and the idea of purgatory makes a mockery of Jesus and what he did on the cross.

Purgatory is found within the Roman Catholic Church. This is a place (my term: Celestial waiting room) where you wait until your non-mortal sins are burned off...Catholic Faith says some sins are unforgivable....these you simply rot in hell for an indeterminate amount of time...Purgatory is a place where people who did not perform Mortal sins but did not get to atone for their sins before death go to "wash' their spirits clean.

THE CATHOLIC DOCTRINE on Purgatory is (Latin), "purgare", to make clean, to purify in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace and are not entirely free from sins.

YES, IT IS BIBLICAL (meaning in the Bible) for CATHOLICS translating purgatory by these chosen scriptures in the NEW TESTAMENT. There are several passages in the bible, for Catholics that point to a process of purification after death.

(Matthew 12:32): "And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come." - not referring to or specifying heaven but purgatory.

(1 Corinthians 3:13-15) "Every man's work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire." -a purgatory stage in which the dead have a chance to be forgiven contrary to hell.

Purgatory is this gigantic lie started a very long time ago by the Catholic cult to scare parents into baptizing their newborn children into the Catholic cult. Basically it was if a child died before being baptized, that it would go to purgatory and stay there until it's sins were burned out of them, furthermore, they expanded this to anyone who is not in the Catholic cult. There is absolutely no foundation in the bible anywhere to support this.
Which means that after you get your sins "purged", you get to go to heaven. Getting baptized in the Catholic cult will keep your from going there.

No, it is not Biblical. In fact, it is 100% contradictory to the Bible and the completed work of Jesus Christ.

Purgatory is about cleansing and working away sins. We cannot do that. Only Jesus can.

Shame on the Catholics for having countless doctrine that directly call Jesus a liar.

There is nothing about purgatory in the Bible. It is a pagan tradition, taught by the Roman Catholic Church. Real Christians do not believe in it.
