Actually, she is referred to simply as "Mary" (it was a very common name then, as now) and this person was later confused with Mary Magdalen. They are not the same person, and no evidence suggests that Mary Magdalen was a prostitute. Much later, Christian leaders, in an effort to play down Mary's role in early Christianity, blended the two stories and put forth that Mary Magdalen was the prostitute. The woman that washed Jesus' feet WAS a prostitute, and yes, it was a sign of respect. She had already been forgiven by Jesus and wanted to show her gratitude.

Mary of Magdalen, the sister of Jesus`s close friend who he raised from the dead, martha`s sister, and the one who washed Jesus`s feet...was not a prostitute in the simple sense. She was a rich woman who had a great deal of power because she used her beauty and seduction to get people to do what she wanted. So in a sense she prostituted herself for power...not for money. She was Jesus`s strongest convert who left everything and was rewarded by being the first to see Him after his resurrection. She was always humble and this was another way of expressing that. She had already been forgiven.

No, it was not Mary Magdalene who washed Jesus' feet with her hair, nor is there any evidence that MM was a prostitute. One of the popes made some kind of announcement that they were all the same woman, but that statement has since been withdrawn by the Vatican.
The exact reason that the woman who dried Jesus' feet with her hair did so is unknown, but the passage does make it clear that she was a repentant sinner and someone who loved Jesus very much, and was mournful about his approaching death.....she did wash his feet with her tears, after all.

I do not believe that it was Mary Magdalene that washed Jesus' feet with her hair. I believe that was Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus (you know, that guy who was raised from the dead) or otherwise known as Mary of Bethany. She washed his feet because it was a prophetic act (prophetic, meaning a foreshadow of something that is to come) of anointing Jesus before he died. That is why it is specifically mentioned because she used a very expensive oil to wash his feet, which in that time was used in burial practices, so it was significant in the whole aspect of Jesus' death.

Mary Magdalen was not the same mary in the bible that was a prostitute. the catholic church acknowledged this fraud they perpetrated many years ago and apologized for it but 2% never gets the word. ( yes, incredibly, Mary was a common name then too. Jesus Mother was also named Mary)
She was a nice lady as were all the gals that hung out with the desciples. She did not wash his feet with her hair but DRIED them. ( after washing them with water) it was common to wash peoples feet in those days as the streets were filthy and they all wore sandals.
she later may have became his favorite desciple, but that is debated still.there were many women that traveled with the group. this fact was left out a lot as they were not considered important in those days. Somebody had to make the coffee.

Mary Magdalen was not a prostitute. That is a lie of the Roman Catholic Church. The Bible says no such thing, just that she had multiple demons cast out of her.
The woman that washed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair was a sign of His death, burial and resurrection from the grave.

Yes, according to the Bible, it was Mary Magdalene that washed the feet of Jesus with her hair.
As I remember the story, she washed his feet and anointed them with scented oil (perfume) in a gesture to show that she recognized him for who/what he truly was. So, consider it a sign of respect.
Now, according to some people, Mary Magdalene ended up being the wife of Jesus, and bore a daughter which she took and fled when Jesus was crucified. But that's a different conversation altogether.

Actually, the bible never calls her a prostitute. She was considered to be a woman of lose moral character because she was a woman who was willing to express herself. This was not something that was acceptable for women to do during this period of time.
This foot washing was something that a wife of the time would do for her husband. It was done as an expression of love.
