I would not GIVE a pet for Christmas, but if I were GIVEN a puppy at that time, I would call it Snowy, and I would call a kitten Holly or Bianca. Snowy and Holly are obvious and self explanatory. Bianca means "white" in Italian.
I do like a white Christmas, holly and red ribbons on the banisters, a welcome wreath on the door, a real Christmas tree with decorations which have been saved from years back, a crib, and old traditions such as carol singers at the door, mince pies, and mulled wine.
I think it is very sad it all has been spoilt through over commercialisation and progressive erosion of the religious meaning of the celebration.
It is a time of goodwill and should remain so.

The person receiving the puppy or kitten should name it. That's part of the joy of getting such a gift.
I think it's a better idea for you to give the promise of a dog or kitten for Christmas on Christmas Day, then go to the shelter and let them pick out the one they want the next day. That way they can politely refuse the gift or pick the one they really want.
If you are giving your own young child a puppy or kitten, remember that it will be yours much more than theirs as you will have to pay the vet bills. Still let them name it. A pet is "used" if it comes with a name.

even if you know that they want a pet, its best not to give them the actual animal on the day. it may not be the one they woudl have chosen and they may end up not getting along with it. Instead why not make up a fake 'puppy voucher' and wrap it up with a puppy book and a collar and lead? Im sure they'll get the idea then they have the fun of going to the breeder and meeting the pups! research breeders in your area etc and about which animal you would like. then all the background work is done for them.
i think Christingle is a good name!

you never never never give a live animal as a present for xmas...bringing it away from its mother and throwing it into the melee of xmas is cruel and thats why so many get dumped after xmas wait until after xmas if you wish to give a animal as a present but you should make sure its what the person wants...after all the festivities then and only then can a animal be introduced into a new home when the new owner has the time and interest to look after it properly...try giving a photo of the animal on xmas day and tell the person is this what you want if so you can have it after xmas....

if I was given a little puppy or kitten for xmas I would be deeply ashamed of the person who gave it for not knowing that animals should NEVER be given as Xmas presents. The sort of person likely to give me a Xmas present would know my animal welfare views about giving any animal as a gift, even to me.
ANIMALS ARE FOR LIFE, NOT FOR CHRISTMAS!!

You really should not give a puppy or kitten for Christmas unless they are already looking for one. The pounds fill up after Christmas with unwanted puppies and kitties that the people didn't want. Find something else, you don't want the puppy to die in the pound do you?

First I must say that dogs and cats are for life not just for Christmas. If I was given a pup I would call it Joie or Mollie. Cat I would call it Buddy. If I was giving an animal to someone then it would be up to them to name their new family member. I would not give someone a pet but would rather give a certificate (money order) so the person could choose if in fact they wanted the commitment of a pet and to give them the option to go and adopt a pet or go to a breeder.

a kitten i would call arnie for a boy or chutney for a girl.
a puppy i would call alfie for a boy or chick for a girl.
i would love a puppy. but maybe next christmas when we have bought our house and can let it run around!
and for all those saying it....some people are sensible enough to be able to care for animals, if they are not then it being given to them at christmas wont make a difference they would get rid of it any time of year.

Giving a live animal to someone as a present is a bad idea unless you know they really want it and will take proper care of it.
I know a retired woman whose daughter gave her a puppy for company even tho the mother had told her she didn't want it. Now she burdened with a pet she doesn't really want. And the daughter refuses to take it back.

I don't think there good presents to give to someone. Its allot of responsibility to care for an animal.
