This might seem like a strange question. One from some larger area near New Jersey would be good, though, cause' people here collecting everything for a few bucks, and then take it on to consignment shops. Many people feel that is a really low thing to do to other people.

Sometimes you just need one thing, and it's the end of the retail season, anyway, and then stores don't have it at all new to buy.

It depends on the price you want to pay. I always have much better luck shopping at thrift stores in CT. There are some Salvation Army stores in NYC but the stuff they have is pretty crappy and slighty more expensive. A 99 cent t-shirt in CT might be $3 in NYC. Plus all the "cool" people here buy up all the good stuff, there's more competition.

Beacon's Closet is THE hip used clothing store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn right now. It's HUGE. They buy/sell used clothing. There has always been a rumor that the employees/owners shop in other states (Salvation Army) and buy things to stock the store. That's why they don't buy much from other people anymore. They raise the prices for a profit. Other people try doing that as well. They go to NJ and buy cheap, used clothes and sell them to NYC vintage clothing stores.

Salvation Army is a big used clothing store.

There's on in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, one near 14th St, and one on 2nd Ave in the 90's.

Hmm...I'm not so sure. I've been to New York once, and I didn't see very many at all. I'm sure there are some, though. Good luck!
