Is this a joke???

A translator has to master the source language well enough to be able to understand all its nuances AND has to be perfectly fluent in the target language. That is why a translator should always translate into his or her mother tongue. Moreover, professional translators usually have a degree in translation or an equivalent degree. And even though, as a profession, translation is not as regulated as law or medicine, several organizations and associations – such as the International Federation of Translators, the Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council, and the American Translators Association – "convey certifications that legitimize the skills and the work of translators according to certain regulations." Sorry to crush your dream, Arthanari R, but judging from the wording of your question, I doubt even your English would be good enough to give you a starting chance in this field.

That does not mean you should not study French if it interests you. It is a very beautiful language, even if I do say so myself.

EDIT:
To add to what Wizzie wrote, "you can translate FROM French"... IF you understand it well enough to 'get' all the subtle differences in meaning, the various shades of expression, colour, etc. That is bound to take many years of study. In my opinion, that level of fluency can only be acquired through prolonged immersion.

P.S. I am also a professional French translator.

My native language is french. Well, I had a friend from India and he learned french in France for in just one month, he is not so bad in it! But, as you want to becoem a translator it can take more time. But, french is very easy to learn, maybe for you it can take 2 yrs, or even one year, it depends on you

The previous answer perfectly sums up the issue.
According to the translator's "deontology", you are supposed to translate in your mother tongue only.
So you can translate FROM French but not in French.

It depends.
But it usually takes about 4-6 years to learn to speak any language fluently.
It also depends on how much french backround you have when you start the course.
Aidios!! Bein vien!
