A philatelist is someone who practices philately - defined as
"the collection and study of postage stamps, postmarks, and related materials; stamp collecting"
so most people call them Stamp Collectors.

It is stamp collecting. Collecting stamps. A gathering of used sticky things prised from envelopes and stuck in an album for future generations to enjoy and be amazed by.
It is also really boring!
Oh hey - first day covers are more exciting though. Philatelists collect them too.

The word means a person who loves taxes and in particular it means the kind that require stamps such as those used for postage and other taxes.
I read somewhere that it was first applied by the French. But, I cannot recall where I read that and how reliable it is. Nonetheless, it is a term for a stamp collector of which I am one.
