I just went to Rome on a school trip, very hot. The place I would most recommend is a trip to St Peters, especially a trip to the top of the dome- the view is amazing, and it is worth the climb. Inside is also quite amazing, It made me wonder what kind of belief someone must have to build something so large.
My other favorite place was the Roman Forum- the center of the Roman Empire, it does not look like much now, but I could just feel the history coming out of the cobbles, the very same cobbles that Julies Cesar and Constantine walked on. It has the added bonus of being near the Colosseum.
Other good tourist attractions include:
-The vatican museums and sistine chapel; very good for art lovers.
-The Pantheon; A two thousand year old monument to the Gods, which is still standing.
-The trevi fountain at night; the most romantic place in the city.
-Giolottis ice cream parlour; experience the best ice cream on earth, the chocolate is delicious.
I would not recommend going to the Spanish steps as they are very busy. I do not know were the best restaurants are, but some of the best are around the Pantheon.

I agree with True_Brit on his location suggestions, but I think that you should visit the Spanish Steps even if it is busy. All these places are crowded because they are worth seeing and how often do you get to go to Rome? Throw a coin into the Trevi to insure your return to this beautiful city.
My other suggestions of things to see in Rome are:
Compidoglio
Santa Maria Maggiore
Villa Borghese Gardens
*Domus Aurea
San Giovanni
Santo Stefano Rotondo
*Santa Croce in Gerusalemme
San Pietro in Vincoli
The Holy See (aka VATICAN CITY.) I'm sure you had already planned to go here, as many do. You can't go wrong here, there are so many things to see... St. Peter's is truly a sight to see, and the work of the great Michaelangelo at the Sisteen Chapel is no doubt a place you must visit.
HAVE LOTS AND LOTS OF FUN!

Just walk and walk and walk some more.
I walked for 16 hours and it was amazing!
You will constantly stumble upon somewhere worth being.
I came across all the places that the previous answerer mentioned and many more! Roma is a place to walk and explore.
For eating go to Trastevere-a back alley neighborhood.

Not a lot of people know this church, but it is beautiful, you must see it!!! It is Sant'Ignazio di Loyola church. When you arrive to Pantheon ask someone for Sant'Ignazio di Loyola church. It is fabulous, tell me your impression!
How long are you staying in Rome?
You have to visit the Colosseo, Piazza San Pietro, Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna and so on, you know! Remember: don't lose Sant'Ignazio di loyola church!
