I'd wait untill the child is 2-2 1/2 years old. Then they can really understand why they are doing it. For toddlers there is the "Little Bear" brand toothpaste with no floriude in it, so you may want to buy that. Just don't put more than a pea-sized glob of toothpaste.

You should begin brushing as soon as she has teeth, but with a toothpaste without flouride for the first couple of years because they swallow so much of it. So buy a baby toothpaste until she's 2, then you can buy a children's toothpaste with fluoride. Brushing her teeth now will also help instill the habit of it and help her learn good hygeine.

Now you should take the step up to kid's toothpaste. It has less fluoride than adult toothpaste. Remind her to spit often when brushing her teeth. It is suggested not to use adult toothpaste until children are 6, but with the junk they eat, especially after Halloween, I've been using adult toothpaste for my son since he was 4!

i started my son when he was about ten months. It's important to take care of their teeth as soon as they get them, but also too it's important to make it part of their routine from an early age so they get used to it and you can avoid tantrums later on. I do it when he is in the bath. I have a go and get as many of them as i can, then i give him the brush and get him to have a go. He is 18months now and loves being independent doing it himself.
