I'm going to attribute it to being a land of immigrants. With no other family around, they turned to the community of the church.
Then in the 1950s we had the Red Scare. God was the opposite of communist somehow and there was a big push for religion.
There is a bible belt in America, and it is scary.
If any of the idiots that are spouting off about America being founded by Christians should happen to read this far, this country was not founded by Christians. The ten commandments has very little in common with the bill of rights. You might be brain washed, check into it.

I'm Scottish too, from Glasgow in fact. And growing up there was every kind of place of worship available plenty of Christians, catholics, Muslim, Sikhs etc etc where i grew up in Glasgow was very multicultural. Church, true does not hold much attention for younger generations. Media, i think plays a large part, all the consumerism and thinking more of getting credit and owning stuff, thinking what you own makes you has alot to do with it. Shame isn't it. Churches of any denomination should be preserved. I still remember the little church across from my school that all the class went to at Christmas and Easter and how pretty it was inside. Its sad to think other children at my primary school now wont get the chance to experience the same thing. Even though im a Muslim now, i still respect other religions.

The interesting thing is that while religion in the UK has indeed diminished our society hasn't collapsed into wickedness and arguably our social problems are less than that of the US. That being the case what practical purpose does religion serve? If it isn't doing positive good for a society then it is a complete waste of time, effort and money.

Not here. Many people will seek worship in an environment they are comfortable in. That is why mega-churches are booming. There are fewer churches, but the big ones are getting much, much bigger. The number of church attenders is growing, especially since 9/11.

i hate to tell you this but in today's America people don't go to church anymore. for me the christian believes are fake. How can a religious group think jesus was Gods son. He does not have one and also the bible is man made. God wants us to believe in him buy just knowing he is there and he also does answer our prays. I think God disapproves the practice of the bible and I think God is very angry with the man you call jesus. When he died he did not go into heaven he is in hell for eternity because he turn people against God.

I think you owe the decline of churches to the decline of ignorance.
The kind of ignorance I'm talking about is visible in the poster below me. America was not founded on Christianity, but on the idea of religious freedom. He is ignorant of history and the Constitution, in addition to current legal affairs.

Because America was founded by Christianity, but people are forgetting the glory of God, and America is going to ban Christian practice in the public which is ridiculous.
