Typically, when a person passes away an announcement is put in the local paper. In the announcement, the information for visitation, funeral/wake, etc, is included along with the information about the person.
My condolences,

The newspaper answers are good, but when it happens in our family we have a close family friend call everyone who should be informed and ask that they, too, spread the word. Condolences are in order, but also celebration of how the departed person touched the world and people. Our wakes are a true celebration of love.

Holly is correct, but remember that not everyone reads papers nowdays. You might want to call those you know who were close to the person to be sure they have the info. Sorry for your loss.

Spreading the word usually works best, aside from the newspaper. You tell a couple close people, and tell them that anyone else close to the deceased is also welcome. Word spreads like wildfire.
If you did do an invitation, I'd phrase it something like "Please come to honor _____ in the celebration of his/her life.
God bless.
