Is he aloud to come on the plane with me whithout going to the bottom of the plane where all the other dogs go? Im flying from Virginia To the Virgin Island? Is he a carry on? Is he small enough? Hes about say 4-5 pounds and hes a little longer than my knee up.

OK, I have a 10 lb Jack Russell, and I take him with me every time a fly.

First, your puppy must be at least 8 weeks old to travel, you must have a health certificate showing that he's had all of his shoots, and another certificate proving that he is in good health at least 14 days prior to your traveling date. The airline will charge you a fee, wich could be from 50 to a 100 dollars each way, American airlines is $80 to $100, and since your dog is small you are allow to take him in the cabin with you, but he must be in a carry on kennel that he would be able to stand up and turn around on, you can get those at any pet shop, even walmart, and he will be count as your carry on allowance, meaning you can not take any other carry on bag, only like a purse or something small.
Half of the time I have flown they don't even check my dogs certificates, but it is a requirement, so better safe than sorry.

And remember to call your airline, they may have specific requirements.
Good luck and have fun on your vacation.

He might be allowed or might not be allowed. He seems to be a small dog thus the airline you are travelling on might allow that to happen under certain restrictions.

No matter what you do; do not just bring the dog to the airport. First you need to take him to the vet and make sure you get a health certificate. He/she will not give you one unless he is upto date on all shots.

That done, you need to contact the airline for pet transport policies. If you are allowed to take him onboard with you, you may need to purchase a small doggy bag as well as pay for any airline fees which can run from $ 75- 100 (US). Some airlines do not have fees, others do. That number seems like a round about figure since I have usually travelled with my dogs.

Some airlines might require you to give the dog a pill to make him drosy or quiet. Dogs get nervous on the planes naturally; especially if they have never been on one so you want to limit barking or shaking.

Once you discuss everything with the airlines, you should ask them to give you the customs number for the Virgin Islands. Unless they already know the policy (which they may or may not know).

They might detain you at the airport until the dog is checked; but again... should he be taken on-board, he will have a health certificate (which you are to carry with you at all times) and you should present that to the customs officer.

I suggest you get the health certificate 3-4 days before travelling at the most.

Good luck!

You can carry him on with you. They make some really nice products to help with this. Almost like luggage for the dog to be in while on the plane. You will have more difficulty once you get to the VI. Check with customs and immigration on what the policy is regarding bringing animals into the country. You may have to surrender the animal for a period of time while they verify that there are no health issues.

Yes,you are allowed to have a dog as a carry on when flying on a plane. The pet must be taken to a vet and receive a health certificate, vet check and if 16 wks. or older it must have a rabies vaccination.Book your flight in advance and tell them you will have a carry on pet.You must have the pet in a hard kennel cab that is large enough so your pet can turn around freely, and it can't be touching the top of cab.You must have a food and water dish also attached. The pet will be weighed at time of arrival for your flight and if not over 09 lbs including kennel cab,the price will be around $120.00 with connental Airlines, and with Delta, the price will be around $170.00.

I beleive some airlines put the dogs on a leash and tow them behind the plane, best to check first.
