Its not an alphabet as much as a list of words used to aid in pronunciation over a radio. If I say "A" you may hear it as "hay", "say" or anything else but if I say "alpha" when spelling something then you know what I mean. If I say "K" you may think it's a cut off part of "OK" or "key" or "cave" but if I say "kilo" when spelling then you know what I mean. Yahoo would be "yankee, alpha, hotel, oscar, oscar", at least in the phonetic alphabet used by the Canadian military. It just all makes it easier to spell things on a radio when there may be bad comms, background noise, explosions or anything else that adds to confusion you don't need.
