Fever is a common symptom of many medical conditions:

* infectious disease, e.g. common cold, HIV, malaria, infectious mononucleosis, gastroenteritis, etc..
* Immunological diseases like lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc..
* Tissue destruction, which can occur in hemolysis, surgery, infarction, crush syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, cerebral hemorrhage, etc..
* Drug fever
o directly caused by the drug (e.g. progesterone, chemotherapeutics causing tumor necrosis)
o as an adverse reaction to drugs (e.g. antibiotics, sulfa drugs, etc.)
o after drug discontinuation, like with heroin withdrawal
* Cancers such as Hodgkin disease (with Pel-Ebstein fever)
* Metabolic disorders like gout, porphyria, etc..
* Thrombo-embolic processes (i.e. pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis)

Persistent fever which cannot be explained after repeated routine clinical inquiries, is called fever of unknown origin.

It could be almost anything. In my experience as a mother of 4, oldest of 7, and grandmom of 8, the usual culprits are ear infections or tonsils. What medication are you talking about? Tylenol, aspirin? If so, that will lower a fever, but not treat the underlying cause. If you are referring to a prescription med, let the doctor know. Doctors usually don't get too upset until fevers persist in the 105 degree range. Have you asked your child if anything hurts? (I'm sure you have, but thought I'd ask). If you are using OTC medications, I would at least call your pediatrician for advice. Hope the child feels better soon.
