Can you buy a gift card to something that your boss would enjoy? Does your boss like Starbuck's or a favorite restaurant. The gift card could be tucked into the birthday card and keep it out of sight until you see how the party goes. If you see no one else giving the boss a gift, then keep the gift for someone else at a later time. If you see people giving out gifts then you can turn in yours. Have fun!

I gather the invitation does not state whether to bring gifts or not.
YOU can't go wrong with a pen set if that is what your interested in. You can actually have it engraved later on if it turns out that way.
The other factor is if no one brings a gift this compact pen set can remain in your pocket or coat or whatever in this way you won't need to be embarrassed if it turns out no gifts were requested. at the same time if it is not used it can actually be returned. Ask at the location to see if it can be exchanged or refunded.
After the fact if it does indeed turn out to be a bring a gift then
you can tell the boss that you would like to take the set to be engraved for him/her.
I hope this is a thought that may come in handy

Hmmm. I was looking at the other answers. A bottle of wine is nice (that is, if he is a wine drinker). You could put it in a nice wine/style gift bag.
Or, a gift card to a restaurant maybe like Applebees or Olive Garden. It doesn't have to be for much (maybe $20-$25?)
He can use it when he goes out with clients or with his family.
A card is fine as well.

RE:
What is a good birthday present to give your boss at their b-day party?
I was invited to a surprise b-day party at a restaurant being thrown for one of my bosses. The party is being thrown by the boss' sister. All of the food and drink is getting paid for by the sister and her family. Is it appropriate for me to bring a gift for my boss? What kind of gift is...

A card is fine but a small office related gift would be better in my opinion..Like a nice Pen set..or something for his desk..if money is an issue I'd go for a more gag gift, making it a fun gift but not too personal..

leave the present in your car and if you see that everyone else brought gifts just be like "oh my gosh i left my gift in the car" and go get it. and no one can really give gift suggestions without knowing youre boss. get them a nice pen or something.

A nice card with a gift certificate to one of his preferred restaurants is a practical gift.

bringing a gift is nice and i think most will bring a gift...you could give him a gift card for a dinner for two, gift card at a music store or a movie store....if he smokes, a nice lighter, or if he likes wine, get him a bottle of wine.....or a magazine subscription....

well if you know what kind of music they like, you could get them a cd. If not, any technological devices like a small electronic planner or something. How much are you willing to spend?
