We are supposed to drink 8x8oz of water per day.
Does milk, tomato juice, beer, etc. substitute for water? I've had conflicting reports from 'experts'. What do the experts on 'Yahoo Answers' say?

Let's think of it this way. For your body to function properly, you need a certian amount of water entering your system to replenish lost by means of sweat, urination and excrements.

In addition, you need to factor in things like heat, salt and alcohol intake which will increase the requirment. Anything alcoholic will not hydrate you cause it take about 20 oz of water to flush out 1 oz of 80 proof alcohol. But other beverage like juices and tea will serve to substitute for water intake.

Beware, many beverage commercially sold contains high level of salt and minerals. Read the label before you pour it down your throat.

There is a lot of debate about what 'counts' in figuring your water consumption. Partly because even food provides water. Tomato & many vegetable juices contain salt, a dehydrator. Beer & many alcoholic drinks also dehydrate you as much as they hydrate you.

So within reason you should probably figure that 1 8-oz serving of milk, tomato juice or beer = 1 8-oz serving of water. If you normally have 1 serving of those 3 each day, you would want to still have 5 more servings of water each day AT A MINIMUM.

Water is of course the best and healthiesy way of getting water into your diet, but according to Stephen Fry (generally accepted as always right about everything in the Universe ever!), the amount of water you get in coffee and tea, and other beverages outweighs any diuretic effects they may have, so you can have alternatives to straight water, and get enough water in your diet. Whilst the other side-effects of having water like this may not be as healthy as just drinking water, you'll still get enough H20 to stay alive.

nope. for chemicals and stuff to work you need water, cause water is a good dissolver and it has some special properties. Because of its polar bonding or something like that and the fact that living organisms need 5 important elements for life, (CHONPS) water is needed in most things.
