After Katrina New Orleans police confiscated many legally owned guns. While there could be an arguement that they an unarmed public would be safer such an arguement misses the point that the legal firearms are generally owned by law abiding citizens. Meanwhile the illegal firearms, are more generally owned by people who are threats to peace. Regardless of any mistakes made at that time how could not returning these legal fireams be defended?

On that site they say the police are demanding more than the basic identification as the gun owner. They are wanting the original bill of sale. That could be non existant in the case of a gift or family heirloom. Or in Kansas or Tobago with the storm.
