Hi there,
I'm not sure that it is a matter of age as it is a matter of understanding. If your children understand that they could get burnt or start a fire or are able to recognize that it is an important responsibility when using the stove then they are ready.
My son started using our gas stove when he was nine...he was able to use it as a tool rather than a toy...when he wanted hot chocolate or toast etc.

It just depends on the child i started cooking when i was 8 or so on a gas stove when i lived with my father now when i moved to my mothers she did not want me near her stove and till this day i cant touch her stove lol yeah I'm an adult but a few things to go over one make sure they understand to always double check to make sure the gas is off and not the pilot light went out also you should be the one to light the pilot light because kids can be careless and its not safe would you rather you get a burn or your child most parents would rather they get it and last but not least always keep a fire extinguisher with in arms reach so in the event something does catch fire it can be put out
