You might have an abcess and thats why it hurts so much. Take some advil to help with the pain, it usually works. You have to becareful with the anbesol, too much is not a good thing..I know how much pain you are in, I am in the same boat, taking antibiotics for a abcess now, waiting for a root canal, and man does it hurt....I am taking advil every 4 hours, and you can take up to 3 at a time! Good luck to you!

Anbesol is a topical ointment that temporarily numbs mucous membranes only. You are applying it 30 times a day because you are using it for a toothache. Anbesol doesn't numb an infected tooth. It works for mouth ulcers etc. I'd suggest you stop using it and call your dentist and ask them to phone an antibiotic to your pharmacy. This will start fighting the infection in your tooth and should help with the pain until you have your root canal.

Use 3 to 4 times per day. Not for prolonged use. If pain persists see physician dentist immediately.
This is a drug, Benzocaine. And like all drugs there is such a thing as over dosing.
If you must wait till wednesday, try other pain relievers.

It could, but something like that I wouldn't worry about. I don't know if you have a Wholefoods store in your area, but they have a mouth wash called, "Kiss My Face" and it works great for pain. It is harmless. It's powerful and is pure Aloe, but It kept my pain at bay while waiting to see the dentist. UNless you have an abcess. That pain is the worst and can give other problems with an abcess. Good luck.

As long as you are going to the dentist I think you'll be fine.I 've had bad toothaches, before and overused anbesol. If you were doing it for long periods of time it would probably be bad for you, just like any medication. It's just a few days and I'm sure you'll be fine.
Sorry, you hurt. Feel better.

I'd give your dentist another call and get their advice. For this much pain they may be able to suggest an alternative. Usually you have to consume several times your body weight of stuff to cause permanent damage - this is how they discover things kill rats in the lab - so you should be OK.

why do you think the directions are there stating 4 times a day at most
if it hurts that much either go to the dentist now or find one who can take you right away
you could have an infection
prolonged pain in your mouth if caused by an infection can cause bacteria to be released into your bloodstream
ex: sub acute bacterial endocardititis (your heart)
