I live in California but I'd prefer Scotland if all else was equal. But it's not. The San Francisco bay area is way better than the south of England, but if I was stinking rich I'd live somewhere like Fort William or Callander. The US commercialized healthcare system is a big issue, that and the terrible schools. Most people will never encounter gun crime, just like in the UK, but the bad areas are very very bad, Oakland kills more people than the UK.
Most Americans have no clue that there's a world outside their borders and it's like being an alien on a different planet sometimes, they just don't know that other lands have people in them. They are also very parochial, the San Francisco news doesn't cover Sacramento despite it being the state capital and only an hour away. In the UK international news is of primary importance, here it seldom gets any mention what so ever.
But the ordinary people are very nice and some are as well informed and aware as anyone in the world, and they have to work very hard to get their information.
Then there's the scale of the place, though even the prettiest parts are only as pretty as Scotland, the prettiest place in the entire world may well be Loch Nan Ceall looking out over a calm sea to the Inner Hebrides. But I get to do so much more here, next weekend I'm renting a 350Z from Hertz and driving it up through the Sierra passes to Nevada. At thanksgiving, since the Indians never saved my ***, I'll be taking an SUV over through death valley to the Grand Canyon and then north to Bryce and Zion before returning through central Nevada.
Overall I'm in the best place for me, and it suits me right now, but your mileage may vary. There are lots of goof places to live in this country and in the UK. I've actually had about enough of California and I'd like to move to Seattle or Boston next.
Oh, one thing I don't miss about the UK. The cameras everywhere, it has become 1984 and nobody noticed it happening. The US isn't as free as it thinks, their police and security services are much less accountable and more authoritarian, but at least they aren't under almost permanent surveilance.

I am from Scotland and as a 24 yr old I would say Scotland. But i intend to go to the USA now (dual citizenship).
Not only does scotland win for health care etc, but i have just finished university, and my tuition fees are paid for because I live and study in scotland (very kind of the government).
Now tho I'll travel to the USA - tie down a job.
Then I'll post my answer in a few years!!!
My parents have lived in both countries, and they say that if the weather was good in scotland it would be the best place to live in the world!!!

Having never lived in any of these places but Scotland I can't say something that isn't biased. The scenery, Scottish accent and language, food and housing are pretty good in Scotland though. There are good and bad bits in every country so there's not really a right answer.
