Most of my kids chewed on their shirts at about that age, it is not from hunger or anything like that, it is sometimes for comfort, but also from a teething urge.. some of my kids would do it alot, and it would drive me crazy, it ruined some of their shirts of course! I guess the shirts were not that important after all, my kids grew up and they turned out ok! I would talk to him about it, but if it gives him some comfort and it's an old shirt, instead of an expensive one... don't spend alot of money on shirts for a 4 yr. old anyway, they grow out of them too darn fast! I would not put anything chemical or harmful on his shirt, but maybe try a reward system... if he chews on his shirt, he has to sit in time out for 3 minutes... reward him for good behavior with other things like a trip to the park or something positive! Good luck!

maybe you perform chewing other things else for him like chwing on food or other edible stuff and as a child he might just follow and forget about chewing his shirt or maybe teach him the hard way not to chew his shirt or bribe him if he dont chew his shirt, or get him occupy with other things or maybe get him other things to chew but best is to get rid of habit now :)

This is not a problem that will just go away. I know High School students who still do it. Try putting soap our something that will not hurt him, but will make him stop.
